Toyota vows to improve vehicle quality amidst rise in global recalls

ToyotaToyota Motor Corp. is finding itself in a bit of a snag these days with a rise in global recalls and a legal probe into its recall practices underway. Thus, Japan’s top automaker has promised to improve further its quality efforts, recognizing that this is a very important step to ensuring continued growth for the profitable automaker. Toyota is known worldwide for producing safe, reliable and high quality vehicles. However, the automaker has issued a recall for more than a million vehicles in Japan, this year alone. Recently, Toyota has also issued a recall of almost half a million SUVs in the US.

Meanwhile, Toyota is also being criminally investigated whether its quality-control officials had wrongfully delayed a recall issue that could have prevented an accident in 2004 which injured a family of five. In response to questions over the quality of its vehicles, Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe said that “The world-class quality that we’ve built is our lifeline. There will be no growth without an improvement in quality. This is the biggest task that this management team must undertake,” Meanwhile, despite these problems, Toyota is still well on its way to achieve its group-based sales forecast of 8.85 million units and production forecast of 9.06 million units for 2006.

Ford to start production of Fairlane crossover in ’08

Ford Fairlane

The crossover Ford Fairlane concept has been OK’d for production by 2008, confirmed a Ford Motor Co. company executive. The Ford Fairlane will replace one of the minivans in Ford’s lineup. The three-row crossover will come at a time when Ford’s minivan sales are plummeting. In fact, Ford might stop production of the Ford Freestar minivan by the end of the 2007 model year. Ford is betting its fortunes on the Fairlane to turn this around.

The crossover’s bold design is based on the Land Rover and is very different from the usually jelly-bean shapes of contemporary minivans. However, it is almost certain that the new model will not actually be called Fairlane. Some Ford dealers have expressed their disapproval, pointing out that it is not a strong name. A similar vehicle is also planned for the Lincoln brand.

Tips for Safe SUV Driving

SUV RolloverAmong the many vehicle types, Sports utility vehicles or SUVs are more prone to rolling over. In fact, SUVs are three times more likely to roll over compared to passenger cars. Moreover, 36% of rollover accidents involving SUVs result in fatalities. This is actually the highest rate in all vehicle categories. To curb this alarming rate, JD Power and Associates offered some helpful safety tips that SUV drivers will find useful.

  • Drive at safe speed, especially on curved roads; keep steering smooth, avoid sudden turns
  • Allow extra distance for braking, be cautious of wet pavement
  • Secure interior cargo behind rear seat when possible, store on roof only when necessary
  • Keep tires properly inflated, check tire pressure at least monthly
  • Use caution when towing, avoid sudden turns
  • Check around vehicle for low-lying objects before entering
  • Lexus to launch Luxury Sports Car in 2009

    Lexus LF-A

Toyota’s luxury arm Lexus is reportedly developing a new two-seat luxury sports coupe to be launched in 2009 for the Japanese, European, and U.S. markets. Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun said that the coupe will be based on the LF-A concept car which Lexus displayed at the 2005 NAIAS in Detroit. The LF-A concept car has a 5-liter V-10 engine and Formula One racing technology. If launched, the new luxury sports coupe will become the priciest model in Toyota’s vehicle lineup. As customary in Japanese newspapers, the Shimbun did not cite sources. As of press time, Toyota has yet to confirm these reports.

Impala and Avalon Top Side Crash Tests

ImpalaavalonThe Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested large sedans in side crashes and found the Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon fared best. Both cars come standard with side airbags and received ratings of “Good.” Despite the hum-drum naming convention, “Good” is actually the best a car can rank in IIHS tests. Side impacts cause the second highest number of car-crash fatalities. Airbags alone didn’t win the test for the Impala and Avalon. The Chrysler 300, when tested with optional side airbags, only received a “Marginal” rating, failing to notch even an “Average” score. So did the Buick LaCrosse and Pontiac Grand Prix. Those that received the worst, or “Poor,” rating weren’t equipped with optional side airbags. That group included the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego, Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. Both the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego, when tested with their optional side airbags, received the top rating of “Good” in 2005. Ford will be making side airbags standard for both cars in the 2007 model year. Even if every car with side airbags didn’t receive the highest rating, they’re still an excellent feature that buyers should look for when considering safety in a purchasing decision.

    Toyota Recalls 130,000 Tundras

    2005toyotatundra

This is a complicated one, folks. Toyota is recalling all 2003 - 2005 model year Tundra pickups due to a federal regulation regarding airbag deployment and child safety seat use. The Tundra has a cutoff switch that turns off the front passenger side airbag if an adult isn’t in the seat, meaning it also shouldn’t deploy if a child seat is in place. However, NHTSA also requires a safety anchoring system for the child seat, which the Tundras in question don’t have. The confusion is apparently due to the timing of the new regulations, but Toyota has decided that instead of installing the costlier safety anchoring system it will simply deactivate the cutoff switch, so the passenger airbag will always deploy. That means no child seat should ever be placed in the front seat.

Airbags cause a lot of injuries to children in car crashes, but we’re wondering why Toyota would bother with such a huge recall — it could cost $16 million — and not do the bigger fix. 2006 Tundras already have the cutoff switch deactivated, and there’s no word on what the all-new 2007 Tundra will feature in this regard. Toyota reports no customer complaints or injuries due to the problem.

Toyota will send out recall notices in September, and owners should contact their dealership about scheduling the service.

Study Says Airbags Safer for Kids

    Airbags

Second-generation airbags, introduced in 1998, were the focus of a recent study that concluded children are less likely to be injured by the advanced airbags then they were by the previous generation.

Children under the age of 6 are 66% more at risk in a car with first-generation airbags than in one with no airbags at all. That’s why it’s recommended to place young children in the back seat. The same age group is only 10% more at risk with the second-generation airbags, which inflate with less force. At the same time, the newer airbags also marginally improve safety for adults. Prior to this study some believed the less powerful airbag deployment meant more injuries to adults for the benefit of children. Now we know that second-generation airbags are just plain better for everybody.

New Mazda SUV will appear in New York Motor Show

Mazda Company distributed first official pictures this Tuesday of their newest car – a different convertible, which is constructed on the newest generation Mazda MX-5 (in some markets it is also called Mazda Miata) basis. The main difference separating the new version of this world famous Mazda roadster from the old one is a rigid folding roof. We should remind you, that all previous generations with their versions had only convertible soft-top and optional mountable (non-convertible) hard-top roof. Consequentially all of the folding action is automated with the help of special electrical motors.

    New Civic Type-R engine Hi-Tech, but Lo-Pow

Honda Company representatives have officially confirmed info that, new generation Civic Type-R will be equipped the same engine that is being used now in the current generation. It is a 200hp producing naturally aspired hi-tech powerplant, that in the opinion of auto experts is too weak to compete with its main competitors like Ford Focus ST, Opel Astra OPC and VW Golf GTI, because last-mentioned cars have much more powerful engines.

The only thing, that could save new generation Civic Type-R from huge embarrassment in front of its rivals would be use of the same technologies, that were used in creation of the highly awarded Honda S2000 engine, which output very similar amount of hp like the earlier mentioned Opel Astra OPC and Ford Focus ST. We can guess that this option would come reality, because this would increase price vastly and would make Civic Type-R less affordable. One of the most obvious and cheapest way to increase price without serious price increase would be to fit this engine with a forced induction device like turbocharger or supercharger. This option also would be in a big question, because Honda has some unofficial (or maybe official) “no no” policy about producing turbocharged petroleum powered cars.

Public presentation of new generation Civic Type-R will take place at the end of July in London Motor Show. This will be dressed in slightly more aggressive bodykit than “rolling slow” versions of the Civic, larger rims and equipped with modernised hard and lowered suspension. Also throttle control and steering adjustment will be improved. We would like to note, that not only usual Civic Type-R version will see the daylight in London Motor Show. It will be accompanied by Type-R GT version. GT will distinguish itself by its longer list of extra installed in this car.

Details about new Civic Type-R will be published after the grand opening to public eyes in London Motor Show. This hot hatchback will hit in the spring of 2007.
