coming up models in 2007

Jeep

The lineup of available Jeeps will practically double for 2007 with the introduction of new vehicles designed to considerably expand the brand’s draw. One of the most important introductions is the 2007 Wrangler. With clearly recognizable styling, the new Wrangler features increased ground clearance, larger wheels and tires, available next-generation Command-Trac and Rock-Trac transfer cases, new electric axle lockers, and an electro-disconnecting front sway bar and an all-new stiffer frame. sdddfsd But even more importantly, the Wrangler is now available with four doors. The 2007 Wrangler Unlimited is the first Wrangler to offer seating for five adults. Rear seats are quite roomy with 37.2 inches of legroom. Doors that open a full 90 degrees provide plenty of rear-seat access. Add to this a dramatic increase in available cargo space: Behind the rear seat is almost three times the cargo space of the standard Wrangler. With the rear seats folded, the available cargo space practically doubles to an impressive 83 cubic feet. The new Wrangler is also available with Jeep’s new three-piece “Freedom Top, ” which incorporates three removable panels—left and right front panels and one larger panel in the rear—that can be removed separately for a variety of open-air driving configurations. The standard “Sunrider” soft-top also features a number of configurations and makes open-air motoring just 30 seconds away. In fact, Jeep claims this new Wrangler Unlimited will be the only 4-door convertible available in the U.S. market when it hits showrooms this fall. Additional Coverage: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Jeep

The legendary off-road brand is also introducing two new models that bring Jeep into new market segments—the all-new Compass and Patriot. Both these vehicles share a platform with Dodge’s new Caliber; however, they look quite different and have different capabilities and goals. Compass is the first model from Jeep that is not expected to handle the tough Rubicon trail. Instead, it’s designed to provide the functionality of a sport-utility vehicle with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car. Compass features a Jeep seven-slot grille, round headlights and trapezoidal wheel openings. The windshield is steeply raked and the side profile shows the uniquely sculpted fender shapes with standard 17-inch aluminum wheels or optional 18-inch wheels. Compass is powered by a 172-horsepower engine and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the Patriot has more traditional Jeep styling—in fact, quite reminiscent of the original Cherokee. The squared lines, signature 7-slot grille and short overhangs contribute to its style as well as its off-road capability. And unlike the Compass, the Patriot has earned the “Trail Rated” badge through a higher ground clearance and a new four-wheel-drive system called Freedom Drive II. This system features a second-generation continuously variable transmission with a low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated. Patriots with Freedom Drive II feature 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a full-size spare tire, an air-filtration system, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lights. The off-road Patriot is also 1 inch higher and meets Jeep off-road capability requirements for traction, water fording, articulation, maneuverability and ground clearance including 9 inches of ground clearance, a 29-degree approach angle, a 33-degree departure angle and a 23-degree breakover angle. Additional body sealing and high-mounted drivetrain vents support the Patriot’s 19-inch water-fording capability. Both Patriot and Compass arrive in showrooms later this year. Kia

Kia debuted its all-new 2007 Sorento in March at the 2006 New York Auto show. While it looks similar to the model it replaces, there are many improvements and upgrades under the skin. Exterior changes to the new Sorento are rather subtle, featuring redesigned front headlights, a revised front grille insert, more rounded bodyside cladding, and redesigned taillights. Inside, the center console, gauge cluster and floor console are covered in new, upscale wood and metal trim materials. Safety features have been upgraded for 2007 as well. Already a recipient of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) five-star rating for front and side crash tests, Sorento features front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, side-curtain airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control, a tire-pressure-monitoring system and active front head restraints. Under the hood is a new all-aluminum 3.8-liter V6 that produces an impressive 262 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission. This is a 38 percent increase in power over the previous year’s engine, and has more horsepower than the Toyota 4Runner V8. The Sorento also boasts a class-leading 5,000-pound towing capacity. Truly off-road capable, Sorento is available with a full-time automatic Torque-on-Demand four-wheel-drive system with low range that detects wheel slippage 200 times per second. Four-wheel-drive Sorentos also come with an Eaton limited-slip differential that transfers up to 50 percent of torque between the rear wheels.
Lamborghini

y460850A1.jpgThe Lamborghini Murcielago is the ultimate example of an exotic sports car, featuring extreme styling, outrageous performance and sales in very small numbers. Now the Italian automaker is raising the bar with the all-new Murcielago LP 640. The new alphanumeric designator refers to the engine position—”longitudinale posteriore”—and its tremendous output of 640 horsepower. This is an increase of 60 horses over the outgoing generation of Murcielago—accomplished by increasing the displacement of the V12 engine to 6.5 liters, as well as a “coherent review of every engine component.” Maximum torque of 487 lb-ft is achieved at 6000 rpm. With added power comes increased performance—62 mph in just 3.4 seconds on the way to a new top speed of 211 mph. Power is directed through all four wheels via a modified 6-speed manual transmission. All that power is handled with a revised suspension system as well as 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli P Zero “Rosso” tires. Braking is also improved, with optional ceramic carbon brakes that have six-piston calipers. The bull’s skin has also been reshaped. With even more aggressive looks, the new Murcielago features new front and rear bumpers, new rear taillights, a single rearexhaust incorporated into the rear bumper and, on request, the engine cover can be made from glass.
Lexus

y457696A1.jpgThere are plenty of new and revised models coming from Lexus for the 2007 model year, ranging from SUVs to high-performance hybrid sedans. But the biggest news is the complete redesign of the flagship LS luxury sedan. The LS 460 carries on the L-finesse design style that the brand first introduced in the GS and IS sedans. Available for the first time in an extended wheelbase version, the LS 460 L provides the utmost in comfort for rear seat passengers. The rear of the car has two sculpted seats and there’s an optional ottoman package in which, rather like in a private jet, the right-hand seat reclines by up to 45 degrees with an adjustable footrest and built-in massager. Entertainment comes from a Mark Levinson audio system that promises theatre-level quality from its 19 speakers, while a hard drive can store no fewer than 4,000 songs. LS 460 gets its name from the size of its engine—a 4.6-liter V8 engine with a dual fuel-induction system that delivers 380 horsepower. This is teamed with the industry’s first eight-speed automatic transmission. The new LS comes out this fall, and will be followed sometime in 2007 with the LS 600h, a V8 hybrid version of this luxury sedan. Sporting a powerful hybrid powertrain right now is the new GS 450h. An impressive 339 horsepower is generated from teaming a powerful 3.5-liter V6 teamed with a high-output electric motor. Zero to 60 mph is reached in just 5.2 seconds, and combined city/hwy fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg.
Lexus
y460860A1.jpg
Also new for 2007 is the Lexus ES 350. Moving into its fifth generation, the ES is the latest Lexus sedan to be designed with the L-finesse style. With a longer wheelbase and a wider track than the ES 330 that it replaces, the ES 350 has a long hood, a pulled-back greenhouse and a short decklid—all characteristics of L-finesse design, resulting in a sleek, modern exterior. The interior of the ES 350 reflects the brand’s luxury roots with premium wood, polished metal and leather accents throughout. Standard equipment includes Optitron gauges, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats, a sliding center console, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, illuminated front cupholders, and an interior LED soft-lighting system. Powered by a new 272-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine coupled with a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sequential shift, the ES 350 offers considerably improved performance over its predecessor. Also getting more power is the RX SUV. The RX 350 replaces the RX 330 with the new name derived from the more powerful 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine that improves both performance and fuel economy, according to Lexus. The 2007 RX 350 gets a number of upgraded features including an acoustic glass windshield, additional insulation in the door panels, instrument panel and floors for improved interior quietness.

Lincoln

y460855A1.jpg

Lincoln revamps practically the entire lineup for 2007 with a redesigned Navigator, the new MKX crossover and a new name and look for Zephyr. The all-new Navigator features distinctive styling, a new frame with independent suspension, and for the first time Lincoln will offer the Navigator L, which has a 12-inch-longer wheelbase and 25 cubic feet of additional cargo space. The front of the Navigator is dominated by a bold chrome grille integrated with HID headlights, with the same pattern carried over to the lower fascia. Inside, the Navigator offers premium luxury seating in all three rows, a flow-through center console, real wood trim and an available Powerfold third-row seat that folds flat into the floor. Joining the Navigator this fall is the all-new MKX. Sharing a platform with the Ford Edge, MKX is the first vehicle to use Lincoln’s new naming system. Offering the luxury, comfort, and convenience that would be expected from a luxury car, the 2007 MKX luxury crossover-utility vehicle (CUV) offers features such as adaptive front lighting, a Panoramic Vista Roof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a 14-speaker THX Certified audio system and DVD navigation. The MKX is powered by a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has an intelligent all-wheel-drive system tuned with an emphasis on luxury performance in all-weather driving. Following the same naming convention, the just-introduced Zephyr will be renamed MKZ for 2007. In addition to the new name, MKZ gets a 263-horsepower V6, available all-wheel drive and a restyled front grille and fascia.

Mazda

 y460830a1.jpg

Mazda continues on a run of introducing new products with three all-new vehicles for 2007. Described as a crossover SUV with the soul of a sports car, the CX-7 looks the part with bold fender flares, a steeply raked windshield, tapered side-window graphic and large wheels and tires. And there’s power under the hood to back up sporty claim—a new version of the turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 244 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is available to help put the power down to the ground. The interior also reflects a sporty style with a three-dial instrument cluster, a console supporting the shifter within close reach, a three-spoke steering wheel and firmly contoured front bucket seats. The ventilation dials, the glove box door knob and the door armrests were all tuned to provide a high quality look and feel. With the idea of providing the same “zoom-zoom” with more room, Mazda has also introduced the larger CX-9. With room for seven passengers, the CX-9 echoes the styling of the CX-7 and is the second Mazda vehicle designed specifically for the North American market. The CX-9 is also the largest vehicle Mazda has ever sold in the U.S., however it is not just a stretched CX-7. CX-9 is built on an all-new platform that is a derivative of the Mazda6. Mazda claims its newest SUV has best-in-class legroom for all three rows, and access to the third row is made easy with a one-touch system to slide the second row out of the way. Both rows fold flat offering great cargo-carrying capability. Power comes from an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces and estimated 250 horsepower. Additional Coverage: Mazda CX-7

Mazda

y460857a1.jpg

Now imagine that power in a compact Mazda3. Coming this fall is the all-new MAZDASPEED3, the fourth model from Mazda to earn this high-performance brand. By joining the MAZDASPEED6, it marks the first time two MAZDASPEED vehicles will be sold in North America at the same time. Already fun to drive as the standard Mazda3, the new MAZDASPEED3 will add to the fun with more power, unique aerodynamics and a specially tuned suspension. Under the MAZDASPEED3’s hood is a 2.3-liter turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that makes more than 250 horsepower. The high-performance engine is properly teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission. Top speed could be as high as 150 mph, making it one of the fastest front-wheel-drive cars on the market when it arrives in showrooms later this year.

New Models Coming in 2007 (3)

Ford

 y459174A.jpg

While 2006 is the “year of the car” for Ford, it appears that 2007 will be the year of the truck and SUV. Earlier in 2006 the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac began arriving in showrooms. With rugged, new exterior styling and a versatile interior with rubber floor covering, the new Sport Trac also gets a V8 for the first time. The available 292-horsepower V8 is teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Also available are a composite cargo box with two-tier storage ability, available hard tonneau cover, three integrated tool bins with drain plugs, and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. Joining the Sport Trac is the all-new 2007 Ford Expedition. Styling now matches closely with the F-150, including the signature three-bar grille. Inside are new seats, a revised dashboard and an array of available amenities. Ford also is increasing the Expedition lineup with a new Expedition EL. Almost 15 inches longer than a standard Expedition, the new EL adds 24 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third-row seat. This makes the Expedition almost as large as the outgoing Excursion. The new Expedition will go on sale this fall.

Ford

y460066A.jpg

Also on sale this fall is the all-new Edge. Aimed to compete in the hot crossover SUV market, the sleek and aggressively styled Edge debuted at the North American International Auto Show with a bold three-bar grille similar to the Ford Fusion midsize sedan. Powered by a new 3.5-liter 265-horsepower V6 engine and teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Edge will be available with front- or all-wheel drive. With seating for five, the Edge has a number of innovative features including the panoramic Vista Roof, laptop storage in the center console, an MP3 player jack and rear seats that fold at the touch of a button. While the Edge offers impressive performance in the crossover SUV segment, Ford and Carroll Shelby have joined together to offer something with considerably more performance—the Shelby GT500. The most powerful production Mustang ever, the new Shelby GT500 will boast a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine producing an impressive 475 horsepower. Available as a coupe or convertible, the GT500 has a bulging hood, a lower air splitter, Le Mans racing stripes, 18-inch wheels and, of course, the mean-looking Cobra badge in the grille. Meanwhile, the Ford GT high-performance supercar ends production after the 2006 model year. Additional Coverage: Ford Shelby GT500

GMC

 y462402A.jpg

Like its Chevrolet cousin, the GMC Yukon has been completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. The Yukon gets new exterior styling as well as increased interior refinement and improved interior quietness. With more power as well as better fuel economy, the Yukon is built on a new, fully boxed frame with wider front and rear track, coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a new, premium interior. Noise-reducing components and materials are used throughout the body structure, including the headliner, door seals and dash area. Features include a power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat, a remote start system, first- and second-row heated seats, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a rearview camera system, a touch-screen navigation system, power-articulating running boards and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a larger 8-inch screen. The upscale Yukon Denali is also new and features fresh styling that further differentiates it from the standard Yukon with a chrome grille, new front and rear fascias, specific headlight design, unique taillights and extensive use of chrome trim. A power fold-and-tumble second-row seat, heated first- and second-row seats, a power liftgate, remote start and all-wheel drive are standard on the Denali. Joining the new full-size SUV later this year will be the completely new 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck. Along with the fresh styling, the Sierra gets wider front and rear tracks, a new stiffer frame, updated suspension, improved brakes and an impressive array of safety features. Extended cab models feature rear access doors that open 170 degrees for easy access. Also available is an enhanced DVD player, navigation system, remote vehicle starting and automatic windshield wipers. Like the Yukon, the Sierra will be available in a Denali version that will boast a luxurious interior and a powerful 6.2-liter 400-horsepower V8 engine. The new Sierra is scheduled to arrive in showrooms later this year.

Honda

 y460169A.jpg

When Honda first introduced the Civic to America more than 30 years ago, it was a tiny subcompact hatchback. The Civic has grown considerably since then, and now Honda is introducing a new subcompact hatchback called the Fit. A far cry from that original Civic, the Fit is a stylish 5-door with seating for five and generous cargo space. The interior can be configured in a number of different ways with what Honda calls the 60/40 split Magic Seat. Seat bottoms can be folded up against the seatbacks to carry tall items behind the front seat; rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests for expanded cargo space; and front seats can be reclined flush with the rear seat to create a comfortable place to lounge (when the car is parked). Fit is well-equipped with standard features such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, front and side airbags and side-curtain airbags. ABS is also standard. A Fit Sport adds a security system with keyless entry, cruise control and a 200-watt, AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers and MP3/WMA playback capability. Fit is powered by a fuel-efficient 109-horsepower engine. MSRP for the Fit with a 5-speed manual transmission starts at just $13,850 (not including destination charge). In other news, the Civic Si sedan is slated to go on sale this fall. This will be the first time Honda has offered its performance-oriented Civic in two bodystyles. The 2007 model will be based on the Si Sedan Concept which was unveiled at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.

Hyundai

 y460839A.jpg

This automaker from Korea continues to grow at an amazing pace. Last year Hyundai introduced a new Sonata, Tucson and luxurious Azera. For 2007, there will be a new Elantra, Accent, Santa Fe and the brand’s first minivan, the Entourage. The Elantra is all new for 2007, with fresh styling, a roomy, upscale interior and a host of new features. All levels of Elantra get front and side airbags as well as airbag curtains. Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) are also standard. Powered by a 138-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 136 lb-ft of torque, Elantra is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Leather seats are available and for the first time they can be heated. The new Elantra will be available as GLS, SE or upscale Limited when it goes on sale later this year. Joining the Elantra is the entry-level Accent 3-door hatchback, following the introduction of the Accent sedan for 2006. Like the sedan, the Accent 3-door features an upgraded exterior appearance with a chrome-accented grille, aerodynamic headlights, larger wheels and tires and smoothly integrated taillights. Power comes from a clean-operating 1.6-liter engine, and while the sedan was tuned for comfort, the 3-door has more of a sporty feel, with the SE getting a sport-tuned suspension and stiffer spring rate. Like the Elantra, the Accent is well-equipped with both comfort and safety features.

Hyundai

 y460136A.jpg

Hyundai is also introducing a completely redesigned Santa Fe, which is the first production vehicle designed at Hyundai’s design center in Irvine, Calif. The Korea-based company wants to provide SUV customers with segment-leading standard safety technologies and a high level of standard equipment at a very competitive price. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), anti-whiplash active head restraints and six airbags including side-curtain airbags are all standard equipment. Santa Fe will be available with a choice of two V6 engines. The standard 2.7-liter V6 is upgraded for 2007 and produces more than 180 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The 3.3-liter V6 is lighter, more fuel efficient and cleaner burning than the previous-generation Santa Fe’s 3.5-liter V6, while producing an additional 30 horsepower. Preliminary output estimates are more than 230 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains are expected to meet the stringent Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) emissions requirements. Joining the Hyundai lineup this spring is the all-new Entourage minivan. The seven-passenger Entourage is the automaker’s first vehicle with its Hyundai Hideaway third-row seat, a simple-to-use 60/40 split-folding rear seat that disappears into the floor when collapsed, giving passenger and cargo flexibility. The 2007 Entourage offers dual power rear sliding doors with power windows, an adjustable conversation mirror and a foldaway center tray table with four standard cupholders. This is in addition to the array of standard features now expected from a Hyundai. The Entourage is powered by a 242-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control.

Infiniti

 y460843A.jpg

The sporty G35 sedan moves into its second generation for the 2007 model year. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the redesigned G35 features a sculpted hood with L-shaped headlights. The grille is more pronounced, which gives the new G a more aggressive, wider stance. Taillights are also updated and the trunk lid has an integrated spoiler, while prominent dual exhaust outlets complete the sporty appearance. Inside are styling cues and functionality taken from the M sports sedan, including a RearView Monitor, a touch screen navigation system with available real-time traffic and the “Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose,” combining the industry’s first 3-way front door speaker array using 10-inch woofers with an audiophile quality head unit. Under that stylish, new hood is the next-generation 3.5-liter V6 expected to produce more than 300 horsepower. The G35 can be equipped with either a 5-speed automatic or close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. The new G features 4-wheel independent suspension with lightweight aluminum components and improved body stiffness, and is also offered with Infiniti’s “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system.

Jaguar

y459485A.jpg

Starting the 2007 model year earlier in 2006, Jaguar has already launched the all-new XK roadster and coupe. Primarily unchanged since its launch almost 10 years ago, this second-generation XK is light years from where it had started. The most technically advanced Jaguar ever to be built, the 2007 XK uses the latest aerospace technologies alongside more traditional Jaguar skills to create a luxurious, powerful, highly advanced sports car with an aluminum monocoque body structure that is 31 percent stiffer (the convertible is 50 percent stiffer) than its predecessor with a 10 percent improvement in power- to-weight ratio due to impressive weight reductions. The all-new XK is visibly sportier than the model it replaces, but the design and shape remain true to Jaguar’s tradition of elegance, with a long hood, steeply raked windshield, large wheels and minimal overhangs. The distinctive oval grille opening, prominent power-bulge in the hood, and rear hatchback all echo the style of the classic E-type. But unlike that classic, under the new Jag’s long hood lurks the latest-generation 4.2-liter Jaguar V8 which produces 300 horsepower, teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Later this year look for the more-powerful XKR which is expected to boast a supercharged V8 engine producing around 400 horsepower.

New Models Coming in 2007 (2)

Chevrolet

y462399A2.jpg

There’s a lot of big news and a little small news from Chevrolet for 2007. Leading the way is the redesign of the brand’s best-selling vehicle, the Silverado full-size pickup truck. With entirely new styling, the 2007 Silverado is built on an all-new platform designed to provide a smoother ride with responsive, confident handling. The most noticeable difference in the new truck is the larger grille with the prominent Chevrolet bowtie in gold. Inside is more room with increased storage capacity. Rear seats for extended and crew cabs provide better support and more legroom. Extended cab models feature a new rear-access door that opens 170 degrees. A variety of new engines will be available, ranging from a 4.3-liter 195-horsepower V6 to a 6.0-liter aluminum block V8 producing 367 horsepower. Chevrolet claims a segment-best towing capability of 10,500 lbs. Silverado will also be available with five different suspensions, each tailored for specific use such as street performance or maximum towing. The new Silverado is expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of 2006.

Chevrolet

 y458784A3.jpg

Earlier in this new model year, Chevrolet introduced an all-new 2007 Tahoe. With fresh styling both in and out, this is the most refined Tahoe yet. Ride and handling are improved, and the new Tahoe gets more power as well as better fuel economy from its all-new 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management Technology. This engine is also able to operate on E85 (a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline). Following shortly after the Tahoe is the more-spacious Chevrolet Suburban. Featuring the same new styling and engine upgrades, the 2007 Suburban, as well as the new Tahoe, offer such amenities as a power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat, a remote start system, first- and second-row heated seats, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a rearview camera system, a touch-screen navigation system, power articulating running boards and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a larger 8-inch screen. Offering many of these same amenities as well as the new V8 engine is the 2007 Avalanche. Arriving in showrooms this spring, the Avalanche carries over the same new styling as the Tahoe and Suburban, but continues to offer the flexibility of the innovative Midgate, allowing Avalanche to transform from a 6-passenger SUV to a full-size pickup truck. Meanwhile, if driving something this large is not a necessity, Chevrolet is redesigning its entry-level Aveo 4-door sedan for 2007. Slightly longer and wider than the previous model, the new model has refreshed styling inside and out. The 2007 Aveo goes on sale this summer.

Chrysler

 y460097a2.jpg

Vehicles wearing the Chrysler brand continue to grow, not only in quantity but in actual size. Arriving in showrooms this fall is the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen, a midsize SUV that shares a platform with the Dodge Durango. With a signature Chrysler grille similar to the 300C, a winged badge, available 20-inch chrome wheels and chrome trim, the Aspen is immediately recognizable as a Chrysler product. The first SUV to wear the Chrysler brand, the new Aspen will offer seating for up to eight adults and premium amenities such as an available power rear liftgate, remote start, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, full-screen navigation radio and SIRIUS satellite radio. And of course, it will have a HEMI. Meanwhile, the brand is looking to make inroads in Lincoln Town Car territory with its 300 Long Wheelbase. Six inches longer than a standard 300, this new model provides rear passengers with an impressive 46 inches of legroom. The 300 Long Wheelbase will be modified by Accubuilt, a leading custom specialty vehicle manufacturer with more than 128 years of experience, and will be sold through Chrysler dealerships beginning this fall.

Chrysler

 y461392a2.jpg

Chrysler is also revamping the Pacifica for the 2007 model year. Exterior styling is updated with many of the styling cues found in the rest of the Chrysler lineup, such as the full-width chrome accent strip on the front fascia, a new grille with three horizontal bars and the distinctive Chrysler “winged badge”. Pacifica will also be available with an upgraded powertrain—a new 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 255 horsepower teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Safety features have also been improved, with Pacifica now offering side-curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment. Meanwhile, the Pacifica will be joined this fall by the next-generation Sebring sedan. Having remained primarily unchanged since 2001, the Chrysler Sebring midsize sedan features all-new styling for 2007 with a face similar to that of other Chrysler models, including the revised Pacifica. Interior styling is designed to move the Sebring upscale with a two-tone color treatment and available leather seats. The next-generation navigation/radio system provides a 6.5 inch touch-screen display and voice-activated commands. Other unique features available on the new Sebring include heated
and cooled cupholders, a 20 gigabyte hard disk for storing music and photos, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and LED interior lighting.

Dodge

 y459271a2.jpg

In a move to redefine the entry-level small car, Dodge introduced the all-new 2007 Caliber earlier this year. Replacing the Neon sedan, the Caliber is more of a crossover SUV than sedan. Although Caliber is not a large vehicle, it features a number of “big” styling cues. A stout, bold grille with a Ram in the middle of the familiar crosshairs makes this car easily recognizable as a Dodge. Large headlights flow into sculpted fender flares, givings the impression of broad shoulders. Although the Caliber looks large, it is actually not as long as the Neon it replaces. It sits slightly wider and taller, and is definitely roomier on the inside. With seating for five and plenty of cargo space, the Caliber sports a number of innovative features including a chilled bottle holder in the glove box, lighted cupholders, a rear dome light that doubles as a rechargeable flashlight, and boom-box-like speakers that fold down from the raised rear tailgate. Available with front or all-wheel drive, Caliber is available with a choice of three engines, ranging from 148 horsepower on the SE and SXT to 172 horsepower on the sport R/T. Later in the year Dodge will release the Caliber SRT4, which will have a 300-horsepower turbocharged engine. Additional Coverage: Dodge Caliber.

2007 Dodge Durango

 y460962a2.jpg

Meanwhile, the Durango SUV gets a new look for 2007, including a redesigned fascia, grille, hood, headlights and fenders. In addition to the new styling, features such as rear park assist, remote start, quad bucket seats and 20-inch wheels will be made available. The Durango’s 4.7-liter V8 will be able to run on E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline), and 5.7-liter V8 will provide better fuel econonmy with its Multi-displacement System (MDS).In 2008, Dodge plans for the Durango to be the first gas-electric hybrid for the Chrysler Group. Also coming this fall is the new 2007 Dodge Nitro. Slotted below the Durango, the Nitro features agressive styling with the signature Dodge crosshair grille, prominent fender flairs, and available 20-inch wheels. Three V6 engines will be available for the Nitro, including a 255-horsepower V6 on the top-level Nitro R/T. Nitro also features a new Chrysler Group feature, the LOAD ‘N GO cargo floor that slides 18 inches rearward for easy loading and unloading of cargo.
Ferrari

 y459616a2.jpg

The Italian automaker has introduced an all-new sports car which is the successor to the outgoing 575M Maranello. Called the 599 GTB Fiorano, the name of this new model from the marque of the Prancing Horse comes from the engine displacement of 5.99 liters; GTB (Grand Tourismo Berlinetta); and Fiorano, the racing circuit that Ferrari uses to hone the performance of its creations. Styling is all-new, and it seems to have a different look depending on the paint color. Of course, the heart of every Ferrari is found under the hood. In the case of the 599, the heart is a 5.99-liter V12 unit derived from the engine found in the Enzo supercar. Output is an impressive 620 horsepower, with 450 lb-ft of torque at 5600 rpm. The V12 can be teamed with either a 6-speed manual or the latest F1-Superfast transmission that can shift gears in as little as 100 milliseconds. Performance stats are impressive—62 mph is reached in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed in excess of 205 mph

Models Coming in 2007 (Part One)

There are at least one hundred 2007 vehicles on sale in the U.S., and many more will be arriving in showrooms through the fall. Take a look at what we know now, and at what automakers have planned for the road ahead . . .

Acura
y461391A.jpgAcura enters the compact SUV market for the first time with the all-new RDX. Making its debut at the New York Auto Show in April, the RDX was designed in California and developed in Japan. The new model uses Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which is the first application of this system in an SUV. The RDX boasts an array of high-tech features designed to set it apart from the competition. These include Acura’s HandsFreeLink Bluetooth wireless system and an available DVD navigation system that can display real-time traffic in 31 major metro areas. A 410-watt 10-speaker ELS Surround System that plays DVD-Audio discs is also available. Under the hood of the RDX is Acura’s first turbocharged engine—a turbocharged 2.3-liter 16-valve 4-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and an impressive 260 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the RDX’s larger sibling will move into its next generation this fall. The premium MDX will be completely redesigned for 2007. Based on the low, wide design and an aggressive stance of the MD-X concept vehicle shown in New York, Acura seems to be taking the midsize SUV in a direction of higher performance. The new MD-X has been tested at the famed Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, so it’s likely that there will be power and handling to match its aggressive looks. Meanwhile, Acura has announced that 2006 will be the last year for the RSX sport coupe.
Aston Martin The legendary British marque will be adding to the sportiness of the beautiful DB9 with the introduction of the DB9 Sports Pack.

y460866a.jpg

Designed to improve both high-speed body control as well as steering response, the Sports Pack is for the DB9 owner that really likes to drive enthusiastically. The Sports Pack replaces the standard wheels with new five-spoke forged-aluminum wheels that not only give the DB9 an even more unique look (there aren’t a lot of DB9s on the road) but reduce the unsprung weight of the car—the new wheels weigh about 1 kg less than standard wheels. Aston Martin also claims that there is “a small but significant additional saving from the use of titanium wheel nuts.” The DB9 Sports Pack’s spring rates are increased by 68 percent at the front of the car and 64 percent at the rear. The front anti-roll bar is modified, and the dampers are revised to support the new spring and anti-roll bar characteristics. Together, the changes are designed to optimize body control and front-end grip without compromising ride quality or adding weight. The ride height is reduced by 6mm, lowering the car’s center of gravity and further reducing body roll. Looking a little further into the future, Aston Martin is close to announcing a decision to build the stunning Rapide 4-door coupe. Built on a stretched DB9 platform, the Rapide concept’s rear doors are so well-integrated into the design that they are almost unnoticed. Inside are four individual seats set in elegant surroundings. A 480-horsepower V12 resides under the hood. If the Rapide does get built, it would likely be a 2008 or 2009 model. Aston Martin has also announced a new model that will debut as the latest ride for James Bond 007. Called the DBS, the new model combines the elegance of the DB9 with the performance of the DBR9 racecar. The DBS will debut in the movie “Casino Royale” later this year.
Audi

y459556A.jpgLong known for its lineup of premium cars and wagons with the legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system, Audi had never built an SUV—until now. The all-new Q7 is loosely based on the Pikes Peak concept shown a few years ago. Built on the same basic platform as the 5-passenger Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, the Q7 is 13 inches longer to accommodate a third-row seat, while the wheelbase gets stretched nearly 6 inches and the width increases by more than 2 inches. Despite the size gains, the Q7 equipped with the V8 engine weighs in at 5,269 pounds, which is 31 pounds lighter than the Touareg V8. Extensive use of aluminum helps keep the weight down. Powering the Q7 initially will be a 4.2-liter 350-horsepower V8 engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Joining the Q7 in Audi showrooms this summer was the all-new RS 4. This high-performance variant of the A4 sedan boasts a 4.2-liter V8 that pumps out 420 horsepower, teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission. Not only does the RS 4 offer impressive power, it also features 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with 255/35 performance tires, a sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), massive brake rotors in front with 8-piston calipers and a 1.5-inch-wider track than the S4. A bit farther out on the horizon is an all-new TT. Redesigning a car that has such distinctive style can be a risky undertaking, but the second-generation TT builds on many attributes of the original and moves the brand forward with new styling elements. The second-generation Audi TT will initially be available as a two-plus-two coupe—a roadster version will be added later. The new TT will go on sale in Europe in the fall of 2006, followed by the U.S. in the spring of 2007.

Bentley
 y460869a.jpg
Bentley Motors has had a very successful run since introducing the Continental GT three years ago, and hopes to continue this with the newest member of the Continental family, the GTC convertible. The GTC carries the lines of the GT coupe with the soft-top in place. A single push of a button transforms this new Bentley into the world’s fastest open-top 4-seat automobile. With its 552-horsepower turbocharged W12 engine, the Continental GTC boasts a top speed with the top down of 190 mph, redefining the idea of “wind in your hair.” The GTC also features a full-time all-wheel-drive system for improved handling in any conditions. The convertible top is a unique seven-bow, three-layer, soft fabric roof with a heated glass rear screen that operates electro-hydraulically and provides impressive acoustic damping and exceptional refinement during use. Inside, passengers are surrounded by the finest wood and leather as expected of a Bentley. An array of luxury amenities includes a premium audio system, an available DVD entertainment system and multi-adjustable seats. The GTC is scheduled to be in showrooms worldwide at the end of 2006. Meanwhile, the hand-built Arnage gets a number of improvements for the 2007 model year, including more power and freshened styling. Both the Arnage R and Arnage T get 50 more horses, which means the Arnage T will boast 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V8 engine. Interior design updates include a new leather-trimmed gearlever and new Thin Film Technology driver information panel providing a clearer display.

BMW

y460851a.jpg

Having just introduced the next-generation 3-Series sedan last year, BMW is following up this fall with the all-new 3-Series Coupe. While the new 2-door shares many of the design cues of its 4-door sibling, it features a number of unique elements as well. The contours of the hood and the front fascia are designed to give the coupe a low and sporty look. A power dome on the hood indicates performance, and BMW has given this new 3-Series coupe power to back it up. For the first time the German automaker is matching its legendary inline 6-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers. Standard in the new 335i coupe is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. This is the most powerful engine BMW offers in a non-‘M’ car, and should get the new coupe to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, according to BMW. Also available will be the 328i, powered by a 230-horsepower non-turbo version of the same smooth engine. If more performance is needed, BMW will introduce three new ‘M’ models this year. Although the automaker is still referring to these as 2006 models, they are new to the U.S. market. The M Coupe and M Roadster, based on the Z4, should provide plenty of entertaining driving with their powerful 330-horsepower engines and balanced chassis. In addition, BMW is bringing back the M6 after a nearly 20-year hiatus. Changed quite a bit from that 1988 model, the new M6 boasts a 500-horsepower V10 engine teamed with a 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). Meanwhile, the next-generation X5 “sport-activity vehicle” will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, arriving in showrooms shortly afterwards. In addition to its updated styling, the 2007 X5 is 7.4 inches longer than its predecessor and for the first time will be available with seating for seven. BMW’s full-time xDrive all-wheel drive system has been updated, and two more powerful engines will be available. A new 6-speed automatic transmission will also be standard. The X5’s smaller sibling, the X3, also gets a freshened look for 2007. Power in the X3 has also been increased with the availablility of a 260-horsepower 6-cylinder engine. X3 will arrive in showrooms this fall.
Cadillac
y459253A.jpg

The resurrection of the Cadillac brand has been most impressive, with new models such as the STS, CTS and high-performance ‘V’series completely redefining the brand. Continuing this trend is the all-new 2007 Escalade. Already on sale, this behemoth has bold styling, a stronger frame, coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering for improved ride and handling. The interior offers a luxury-car level of refinement and includes a Bose 5.1 Digital Surround audio system and an available navigation radio with touch-screen controls. Standard features include a power liftgate, a remote starter and side-curtain airbags, while optional equipment includes 22-inch chrome wheels, climate-controlled front seats, power fold-and-tumble second-row seats, power articulating running boards and IntelliBeam headlights. Also available as the extended-length ESV or pickup-like EXT, the Escalades boast a new 6.2-liter all-aluminum V8 engine that produces an impressive 403 horsepower. Meanwhile, the SRX crossover SuV gets a redesigned interior for 2007 with a new instrument panel and upgraded trim throughout. SRX also gets a new 6-speed automatic transmission designed to increase performance and fuel efficiency.

NISSAN’S TOP EXECUTIVES TO HOLD LECTURES at Oxford University

TOKYO (Oct. 12, 2006) – In commemoration of its 25th anniversary, the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at Oxford University will be hosting a series of annual lectures by Nissan Motor Co.’s top executives on the company’s manufacturing and revolutionary management methodologies. This year’s lectures, which will be held on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13, will be given by Tadao Takahashi, executive vice president of manufacturing, and Colin Dodge, senior vice president of Nissan Europe.
As a successful global automotive company, Nissan’s corporate citizenship extends towards promoting education and community development. The Nissan lecture series is an opportunity to share some of the secrets of Nissan’s corporate success with faculty and students beyond the traditional boundaries of the institute’s Japanese studies, by providing examples and case studies encountered in the real-world competitive business environment.
Lecturing on the topic “The Nissan Production Way (NPW) in Japan and UK,” Takahashi will expand on how the NPW and the principle of “dokiseisan” - meaning synchronization with the customer – allow Nissan to maintain flexible and integrated manufacturing, and keep lead times short. The NPW incorporates integration at supplier, global and logistics levels, contributing to Nissan’s distinction as the most productive manufacturer in the world. In addition, Takahashi will highlight the application of Nissan’s unique Cross Functional Team (CFT) as an effective management tool.
Dodge will explain how the NPW has become the international standard for manufacturing in the world, and has been adopted in all of Nissan’s global manufacturing facilities worldwide. The Sunderland plant in the UK is a great success story for Nissan as it is well recognized as the most productive automotive plant in the Western world today.
As part of its ongoing collaboration, Nissan will continue to explore other exchange opportunities with the Institute particularly in the areas of social contribution, guest lecturers and visiting scholars.
The Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies was established in 1981 at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford following an endowment from Nissan and has since become one of the top European centers for the study of modern Japan. By 2008, Nissan’s total benefaction to the Institute is expected to reach £5.6 million.
The Institute’s core academic posts covers social anthropology, economics, politics and modern Japanese history, and it currently offer various degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels under the Social Science and Humanities studies.

Road Test: Peugeot 207 GT Turbo

The 205 of 1984 was surely the most entertaining hatch ever built. Then the flame died. Now, with the 207 GT Turbo, says John Simister, it’s back - and how

clip_image0018.jpg

Such an engine in a small car is always appealing. It’s what the 205 GTI had, after all. It’s a pity about the shift quality of the five-speed gearbox, though, which is rubbery and not at all mechanical-feeling in its lateral movements. At least the gear ratios are quite close, so the engine speed doesn’t drop too far when you change up. It helps cement the sporty ambience. But not as much as the revised suspension does. Compared with the GT HDI 110, it has stiffer rubber in the lower front suspension arms’ rear mountings (vital for steering precision), a stiffer crossbeam between the rear suspension arms (it helps load up the outside rear wheel when cornering), and dampers recalibrated to suit the lighter engine. Don’t be put off by these technicalities, because they account for what happens next.

For me, it was a life-affirming moment. In it was contained the feeling that it’s all going to be all right, that Peugeot has found the plot again. I turned into a fast flick on an open country road outside Paris, felt the nose tuck in with exact precision, felt the steering wheel pulling at my hands with a strength convincingly matched to the cornering force, and felt the 207’s rear move smoothly out to an attitude designed to help point the front. This is it: a hot hatchback with a tail mobile enough to help to point the nose, the amount by which it does so dependent on how hard I’m accelerating or whether I’m suddenly slowing down.

Peugeot’s past car-handling guru, Jean Baudin, always said that the way the rear suspension behaves has a vital effect on how a car steers. Channel the forces the right way and you can have a car eager to respond to a driver’s inputs, a car whose trajectory is finely controllable on the accelerator as much as with the steering wheel.  The 207 GT Turbo does this and it’s a joy. It even rides over bumps better than the HDI 110 version. Peugeot has got back on the Damascene road, and the revelation has been properly imparted.

Nor need you fear that the tail’s eagerness to help out might turn into a spin if you’re not paying attention. The old 205 could do that but the 207 does not, thanks to innately benign characteristics and a subtly helpful, never intrusive ESP system. Even better, the GT Turbo actually costs less than the HDI 110. So, unless you absolutely must have the hyper-economical version, the GT Turbo is clearly the one to have. Now Peugeot just has to make sure the 207 GTI fulfils the expectations the GT Turbo has just created. The car world is watching. Don’t mess it up, mes braves.

The rivals Ford Fiesta ST £13,595

The most obvious rival has great handling but its 2.0-litre engine is rougher and less punchy than the 207. Outright pace is similar, standard equipment significantly less. Looks good with optional stripes. Seat Ibiza 20vt FR 150 £11,975

Seat uses fat wheels and hard suspension to impart “sportiness”, but it’s a shallow transformation. Turbo engine has 20 valves and 1.8 litres, with a similar pace to the Peugeot’s. Good value. Mini Cooper with Chili pack £13,695

About to be replaced by a similar-looking new model, the Mini remains an extraordinary car-culture phenomenon. Great fun to drive, however, it’s slower and less well-equipped than the 207. Source:-[Motoring Independent]

New Models Coming to America

clip_image0028.jpg
AIADA Contributing Editor

Almost 100 new models were introduced during the opening of the 2006 Mondial de Automobile in non-stop, 15-minute spurts of product reveals, hype and info-dumps. It was an impossible task to attend them all.
Instead, I opted to use the time prudently, save my strength in the sweltering heat in the halls (air conditioning is rare in France) and primarily visit the stands of those manufacturers whose vehicles are sold in America.
And always wait until after the international media scrum of photographers, videographers, writers and journalists at the official presentation. This allows some walk-around, look-in and sit-in time to get a quick reaction to the vehicle.
There is a lot of very interesting new product headed for U.S. shores in the next few months from European and Asian manufacturers – product that will, I believe, help to significantly increase international brand’s market share.
It’s important to note that many of the models were diesel powered, which Europeans prefer. When sold in America they will have internal combustion engines. Here are a few that really impressed me:
The Mini get mighty – Looks can deceive. The well-selling Mini looks the same inside and out, but it’s a bit longer, has larger dials and gauges on the dash and has a more powerful 50 hp engine. A new station wagon is coming soon and so is a revamped convertible.

 The New, Longer Mini
Uber luxury for Mercedes-Benz – The new CL class has limited production – 10,000 or so worldwide, and a limited number of customers with a price tag of around $140,000 to $200,000, depending on the specific model. But it’s a beauty.
Nissan’s crossover Quashuai – An unpronounceable and odd name, but this crossover looks like a winner with styling DNA from the Murano. Despite the Asian brand name, this car was designed and will be built in England. An American version, I was told, will be introduced this January in Detroit at the NAIAS with a slightly different body design. Check out this demo of the new Quashuai!
VW’s heating up with the Iroc Scirocco concept – Yeah, yeah its just a concept, but with all the buzz and inferences concerning launch dates of early 2008, and maybe, just maybe end of 2007, this could be a big winner. Aimed at younger buyers with a wish for speed or the impression of speed, this beauty sports the new VW grill. Add some teeth and it might have a resemblance to Great White Sharks. VW – part deux – Augmenting the Jetta models, a hatchback is due to hit America very soon.

Audi’s R8 is styling, speedy and sexy – At six figures in both Euros and dollars, this mid-engine brings a new level to Audi’s expanding line-up of vehicles. Not many will be produced and the dealer requirements for space, display, etc., are said to be quite stringent. Limited to a few select dealers, but watch out …this will move fast.

The Sleek Audi R8

Rolls-Royce’s new drop top – This will make a lasting impression. Perfect for Madame’s daily trip to Rodeo Drive and the supermarket. Yeah, sure.
Kia & Hyundai, conjoined platforms but separated by brand – Take one platform and let it do double duty. That’s what’s on the way to America with a sporty, stylish Kia called the Cee’d in Europe, and the more luxurious, upscale Hyundai known as the Amejs. These vehicles should add to both brand’s growth. Think crossover.

The Trendy Kia Cee’d
A few others coming to America – Volvo’s C30 hatchback was receiving a lot of viewing action from European photographers and journalists. Ditto for the refreshed Land Rover LR2.Mazda has a concept car that is low, lean and lithe – it’s a new look at the future of this zoom-zoomer.
This is a huge show and covering all of it in just two days is almost impossible. The good news is the North American International Automobile Show in Detroit is not too far away. What was covered/missed here in Paris is sure to make it to Detroit where the pace is just a little bit more leisurely.
So, goodbye from the City of Lights … and to all the brands featured here at the Paris Auto Show – bon chance!
