There’s a lot of big news and a little small news from Chevrolet for 2007. Leading the way is the redesign of the brand’s best-selling vehicle, the Silverado full-size pickup truck. With entirely new styling, the 2007 Silverado is built on an all-new platform designed to provide a smoother ride with responsive, confident handling. The most noticeable difference in the new truck is the larger grille with the prominent Chevrolet bowtie in gold. Inside is more room with increased storage capacity. Rear seats for extended and crew cabs provide better support and more legroom. Extended cab models feature a new rear-access door that opens 170 degrees. A variety of new engines will be available, ranging from a 4.3-liter 195-horsepower V6 to a 6.0-liter aluminum block V8 producing 367 horsepower. Chevrolet claims a segment-best towing capability of 10,500 lbs. Silverado will also be available with five different suspensions, each tailored for specific use such as street performance or maximum towing. The new Silverado is expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of 2006.

Earlier in this new model year, Chevrolet introduced an all-new 2007 Tahoe. With fresh styling both in and out, this is the most refined Tahoe yet. Ride and handling are improved, and the new Tahoe gets more power as well as better fuel economy from its all-new 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management Technology. This engine is also able to operate on E85 (a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline). Following shortly after the Tahoe is the more-spacious Chevrolet Suburban. Featuring the same new styling and engine upgrades, the 2007 Suburban, as well as the new Tahoe, offer such amenities as a power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat, a remote start system, first- and second-row heated seats, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a rearview camera system, a touch-screen navigation system, power articulating running boards and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a larger 8-inch screen. Offering many of these same amenities as well as the new V8 engine is the 2007 Avalanche. Arriving in showrooms this spring, the Avalanche carries over the same new styling as the Tahoe and Suburban, but continues to offer the flexibility of the innovative Midgate, allowing Avalanche to transform from a 6-passenger SUV to a full-size pickup truck. Meanwhile, if driving something this large is not a necessity, Chevrolet is redesigning its entry-level Aveo 4-door sedan for 2007. Slightly longer and wider than the previous model, the new model has refreshed styling inside and out. The 2007 Aveo goes on sale this summer.

Vehicles wearing the Chrysler brand continue to grow, not only in quantity but in actual size. Arriving in showrooms this fall is the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen, a midsize SUV that shares a platform with the Dodge Durango. With a signature Chrysler grille similar to the 300C, a winged badge, available 20-inch chrome wheels and chrome trim, the Aspen is immediately recognizable as a Chrysler product. The first SUV to wear the Chrysler brand, the new Aspen will offer seating for up to eight adults and premium amenities such as an available power rear liftgate, remote start, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, full-screen navigation radio and SIRIUS satellite radio. And of course, it will have a HEMI. Meanwhile, the brand is looking to make inroads in Lincoln Town Car territory with its 300 Long Wheelbase. Six inches longer than a standard 300, this new model provides rear passengers with an impressive 46 inches of legroom. The 300 Long Wheelbase will be modified by Accubuilt, a leading custom specialty vehicle manufacturer with more than 128 years of experience, and will be sold through Chrysler dealerships beginning this fall.

Chrysler is also revamping the Pacifica for the 2007 model year. Exterior styling is updated with many of the styling cues found in the rest of the Chrysler lineup, such as the full-width chrome accent strip on the front fascia, a new grille with three horizontal bars and the distinctive Chrysler “winged badge”. Pacifica will also be available with an upgraded powertrain—a new 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 255 horsepower teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Safety features have also been improved, with Pacifica now offering side-curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment. Meanwhile, the Pacifica will be joined this fall by the next-generation Sebring sedan. Having remained primarily unchanged since 2001, the Chrysler Sebring midsize sedan features all-new styling for 2007 with a face similar to that of other Chrysler models, including the revised Pacifica. Interior styling is designed to move the Sebring upscale with a two-tone color treatment and available leather seats. The next-generation navigation/radio system provides a 6.5 inch touch-screen display and voice-activated commands. Other unique features available on the new Sebring include heated
and cooled cupholders, a 20 gigabyte hard disk for storing music and photos, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and LED interior lighting.

In a move to redefine the entry-level small car, Dodge introduced the all-new 2007 Caliber earlier this year. Replacing the Neon sedan, the Caliber is more of a crossover SUV than sedan. Although Caliber is not a large vehicle, it features a number of “big” styling cues. A stout, bold grille with a Ram in the middle of the familiar crosshairs makes this car easily recognizable as a Dodge. Large headlights flow into sculpted fender flares, givings the impression of broad shoulders. Although the Caliber looks large, it is actually not as long as the Neon it replaces. It sits slightly wider and taller, and is definitely roomier on the inside. With seating for five and plenty of cargo space, the Caliber sports a number of innovative features including a chilled bottle holder in the glove box, lighted cupholders, a rear dome light that doubles as a rechargeable flashlight, and boom-box-like speakers that fold down from the raised rear tailgate. Available with front or all-wheel drive, Caliber is available with a choice of three engines, ranging from 148 horsepower on the SE and SXT to 172 horsepower on the sport R/T. Later in the year Dodge will release the Caliber SRT4, which will have a 300-horsepower turbocharged engine. Additional Coverage: Dodge Caliber.

Meanwhile, the Durango SUV gets a new look for 2007, including a redesigned fascia, grille, hood, headlights and fenders. In addition to the new styling, features such as rear park assist, remote start, quad bucket seats and 20-inch wheels will be made available. The Durango’s 4.7-liter V8 will be able to run on E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline), and 5.7-liter V8 will provide better fuel econonmy with its Multi-displacement System (MDS).In 2008, Dodge plans for the Durango to be the first gas-electric hybrid for the Chrysler Group. Also coming this fall is the new 2007 Dodge Nitro. Slotted below the Durango, the Nitro features agressive styling with the signature Dodge crosshair grille, prominent fender flairs, and available 20-inch wheels. Three V6 engines will be available for the Nitro, including a 255-horsepower V6 on the top-level Nitro R/T. Nitro also features a new Chrysler Group feature, the LOAD ‘N GO cargo floor that slides 18 inches rearward for easy loading and unloading of cargo.

The Italian automaker has introduced an all-new sports car which is the successor to the outgoing 575M Maranello. Called the 599 GTB Fiorano, the name of this new model from the marque of the Prancing Horse comes from the engine displacement of 5.99 liters; GTB (Grand Tourismo Berlinetta); and Fiorano, the racing circuit that Ferrari uses to hone the performance of its creations. Styling is all-new, and it seems to have a different look depending on the paint color. Of course, the heart of every Ferrari is found under the hood. In the case of the 599, the heart is a 5.99-liter V12 unit derived from the engine found in the Enzo supercar. Output is an impressive 620 horsepower, with 450 lb-ft of torque at 5600 rpm. The V12 can be teamed with either a 6-speed manual or the latest F1-Superfast transmission that can shift gears in as little as 100 milliseconds. Performance stats are impressive—62 mph is reached in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed in excess of 205 mph
