How Honda Won the Auto Market in Pakistan

Since the release of its popular models, the Accord and the Civic, a little over twenty five years ago, Honda has rapidly risen to become the preferred car in its class for both new and used car buyers. While cars at that time offered similar standard features, Honda went a step ahead and offered consumers extra features and trims for similar prices and a chance to own a truly luxurious, high quality car.

Honda offered car buyers an opportunity to own a high quality, luxurious car with extra trims and features like power windows and power steering. Cars made by other manufacturers, competing in the same segments, were missing these features and despite being less costly, started to see declining sales. Honda on the other hand became increasingly popular and a once obscure car was now highly visible on the urban streets of Pakistan.

Before Honda there was Toyota. Toyota catered to almost all segments of the automotive industry with extremely well known brands such as the Corolla, Crown, Corona and Mark II. Mazda, Suzuki and Nissan had a few models as well but were far behind in terms of market share. Toyota was considered a highly reliable car and commanded a high resale price in the used car market as well. People preferred Toyota more for its practical value and lack of a better car at that point.

Honda’s superb engine and fuel economy helped enhance it’s growing popularity and demand. While Toyota had been commanding high resale values, cars by other manufacturers faced substantial depreciation in value. However, once Honda’s reliability and efficiencies became widely publicized, both the demand and price for its cars rose dramatically in the Pakistani used car market.

The well designed interior and exterior of the Honda proved difficult for other manufacturers to compete with, allowing Honda to stay ahead. With a roomy and comfortable interior and fabric seats, traveling within and between cities became a whole lot more enjoyable. In order to compete in the smaller engine market, Honda introduced the City in Pakistan, and once again managed to gain market share from its formidable rival model, the Toyota Corolla. Honda soon began local manufacturing to maintain its competitiveness in terms of price.

Honda has managed to become one of the most popular cars in Pakistan in a short span of time. Its mass appeal and well-deserved reputation has made it the primary choice for car buyers all over Pakistan. It’s high quality finish and introduction of safety features, year after year are all indicators of Honda’s continuing dominance in Pakistan’s used and new auto industry well into the future. I hope it brings as much freshness and excitement to the Pakistani car industry in the future as it has in the past.
