Over the years, SUV designs have been directed in acquiring comfort and handling like that of a car. But Nissan walk off track, instead it goes back to the roots of Sports utility vehicles. The Xterra is aimed to follow its SUV ancestors which connotes that it is more like a truck! Nissan Xterra comes as a ruggedly handsome vehicle with a perfect combination of style and functionality. Since being rugged is also being cool, Xterra experienced a vast success ever since it was unveiled by Nissan as a compact sport-utility in the year 2000. This SUV has met and even exceed Nissans expectations. Until now, Nissan Xterra is still cool! Among its cool and handsome features are the basket for wet clothes located in the roof rack and a mountain-bike rack found inside the stowage bay. It is always nice to be conventional and an innovator at the same time.

BERLIN — BMW AG plans to put 50 hydrogen-powered 760Li cars on U.S. roads next year. It hopes to build support for the technology by getting the vehicles into the hands of influential people. The Hydrogen 7 models have an internal-combustion engine that runs on liquid hydrogen or gasoline.

They will be driven by selected consumers for free starting in mid-2007. Most will be in Washington and Los Angeles, home of the only two permanent U.S. hydrogen refueling sites. At the push of a button, the Hydrogen 7’s 6.0-liter V-12 engine alternates between gasoline and liquid hydrogen. In hydrogen mode, the engine emits only water vapor and traces of nitrous oxides or carbon dioxide, says Frank Ochmann, BMW’s hydrogen-car project leader. “What comes out is cleaner than the air around you,” he says.
Timm Kehler, vice president of marketing innovations, says celebrities and “opinion leaders” will be selected to take the vehicles for periods ranging from four weeks to four months. Some cars will be put into other markets, where they can be fueled at BMW’s mobile hydrogen fueling stations.

The company plans to run trials of the car for several years, says Kehler.
BMW would not disclose the cost of the Hydrogen 7 cars or how much it spent to develop them. The cars were unveiled here this month.

Not yet practical

Before a hydrogen vehicle can be marketed, a fueling infrastructure is needed. That could take 20 to 30 years, BMW says. A lighter and smaller hydrogen tank and a direct-injection system for delivering hydrogen to the engine also are required.
The Hydrogen 7 looks like the standard 7 series except for three small “hydrogen” nameplates. A small opening on the hood allows hydrogen vapors to escape.
In hydrogen mode, the 260-hp engine runs louder. There is no perceptible lag when the engine switches from gasoline to hydrogen. The car has a range of 125 miles on hydrogen and an additional 310 miles on gasoline. A 1.2-inch-thick, 440-pound cryogenic fuel tank stores 45 gallons of liquid hydrogen at minus 487.4 degrees Fahrenheit. BMW says the insulation is equivalent to the thickness of 56 feet of Styrofoam.
The large tank uses half of the trunk space. Rear seats are moved up 4.5 inches to accommodate the tank.

BMW says the Hydrogen 7 has logged more than 600,000 miles in test drives, and its safety has been tested extensively. If the tank ruptures, the liquid hydrogen freezes and then vaporizes, BMW says.BMW has developed a coupling system that allows the car to be filled with liquid hydrogen at a conventional filling station with fuel stored in above-ground tanks. The tank can be filled in eight minutes.

The din and noise of irrational car craze fuelled by remittances and powered by lease-financing, may have died down, but the appetite of the indigenous auto industry to mint money does not seem to have abated a bit. The industry relishes customers’ helplessness and deny them bookings. Such an abnormal situation runs counter to ‘universal code of corporate governance’. It also reflects adversely on government’s inadvertence to address customers’ concerns, reflected in the media routinely. It was anticipated that import of cars in CBU condition would ease the situation and make availability of cars hassle-free at competitive rates. This has not happened.

The bane of premium or ‘on’ money, coined in local parlance for premium, still rules the roost. Realizing booking charges on the spot, running into thousands, unheard in business channels, is another unholy stain, besmirching the auto-industry. Delivery of cars at door-steps, the dates dished out by auto sector by months, are a norm not an exception. With a view to make hay while the sun shines, the gimmick of assemblers to release vehicles in the market to regulate quantum of demand for cars with an ulterior motive of maximizing profit-taking, is another attempt to exploit customers’ helplessness. In the face of such a contrived scenario, the claims of the companies, promising prompt delivery of vehicles, following hyped investment by billions, looks hollow like boastful politicians, promising moon to voters at the time of elections or making country next Asian Tiger. To cash in on customers’ choice for a popular hue, some dealers do not demur to demand extra bucks, collecting their share in the pound of flesh from their corpus. The government’s directive, binding assemblers, pay mark-up on deposits, if delivery dates exceed two months, is being obeyed faithfully by most assemblers in stark disavowals. If the prices of cars escalate in-between booking and delivery dates, buyers are barred to cast a passing glance at their dreamt wheelers, until they shed the differential, despite full payment, made in advance. Trade ethics warrant fair play in business dealings. If one makes full payment, one is entitled to delivery of car on the spot. If, for reasons unknown, it is not possible to deliver and the prices escalate in-between booking and delivery dates, customers are entitled to receive possession of the products at the old price. The differentials could be due, if bookings are made only on token advances. In the past, handsome sums were squeezed from customers, despite full advance payments at the time of bookings. The pricing of assemblers’ products is also not without concern when compared to cost of corresponding products, prevailing in the neighbouring country. More so, when operating conditions like cheap labour and land, besides knocked off levies, are almost identical in both countries. My Mauritian host revealed that the sugar sells dirt cheap in his country, because it is manufactured from the sugar cane, grown locally in that country and as such the government does not want to fleece its denizens on the pretext, that the price of the commodity is high in the international market.

Financial benefits, accruing from the steep dip in the exchange rate of the greenback in the past, staying the course for a long time, were not transferred to customers. But, when the value of the dollar appreciated and that too for a very short stint, the assemblers lost no time to raise the prices.

Astonished by unprecedented demand for new cars despite availability of imported ones, assemblers have chosen to use banks and leasing companies to do bookings and perform all unholy acts on their bidding. Charging soaring interest and processing fee by leasing institutions, is yet another issue. The adoption of such a circuitous route is detrimental to customers’ interests, who ultimately end up virtually paying double price, fixed by a company. The quality of cars, when compared to matching models of imported ones, leaves a lot to be desired. Stunned by over-whelming demand, assemblers churn out units, caring two hoots for the quality of their makes. Scarcely a car escapes the bane to retrace its foot prints to high profiled 3S, for rectification of defects, detected by buyers. Blanket recall by an assembler of a popular make in the past, exhorting customers, reach for removal of defect in the front wheel of their cars, is a case in point. Car advertisements, almost non-existent during initial years of the craze, now intermittently appear in the print media. These ads, though long on qualities but short on pricing, do not accord well with the basic principle of advertising—-right to choose’ from the lot available in the market. In India , manufacturers do not demur to quote prices in their ads in bold and bright figures to educate their customers, enabling them make right choices. Financing car buy through leasing has rendered more harm than good to most middle class members, a vanishing breed. No doubt, the introduction of leasing factor in auto industry generates jobs, accelerating industrial wheels, but its side effects prove to be more lethal than all ills, clubbed together, confronting the car market. Unable to manage hefty instalments, poor purchasers who initially manage down payments, are at pains to pay instalments, beefing up with the rise in interest rates imperceptibly. They default and ultimately find their cars, landing in the junk yard of the leasing institutions, while their down payments and paid up instalments going down the drain. Permitting expenditure of big money by billions on pursuits, bordering on luxury as against investment on social sectors, clamouring for funds, nowhere nears the targeted government’s goal of good governance. And the arbitrary extension of the leasing policy to embrace imported vehicles and electrical gadgets mostly made on foreign soil, whirl industrial wheels abroad, veering off policy off the track. Fearing fierce competition from car imports, the nervous assemblers initially resorted to releasing SOS calls, apprehending annihilation of auto industry. Officials sitting in Islamabad , rushed to their rescue for obvious reasons, clogging labyrinth of several muffled ifs and buts to the import policy. To please the upper classes, duty slabs for cars used by them above 1300 cc, were substantially slashed, but the poor plebs, going for 800 to 1300cc motors, were denied any such concession. The end result is, that we are back at square one while the auto-sector continues to go from bad to worse. The government would do well to allow unfettered import of cars of the make, made indigenously by slashing import up to 1300 cc and withdrawing lease-financing, until sanity prevails in the market. The action would at least end agonies of Karachiites, who take pummeling with the emergence of 400 four-wheelers on the rough and uneven roads every day.

The top-of-the-line SUV in the Suzuki lineup is getting completely redone for the 2007 model year, replacing the boxy rear-wheel-drive truck-based SUV with a stylish modern front-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive crossover SUV. The new XL7 is the largest vehicle that Suzuki has ever built for North America. Seating is available for up to seven passengers, with those sitting in the third row enjoying almost 40 inches of legroom. The third row is also split folding, and the seats fold flat into the floor for added versatility and cargo capacity. Luxury amenities such as leather trim, a DVD entertainment system and a satellite navigation system are available. Powering the new XL7 is a 3.6-liter 250-horsepower V6 that was developed through a joint effort between Suzuki and General Motors. Teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission, this new engine—while considerably larger and more powerful than its predecessor—actually gets improved fuel economy. The new XL7 will be available as either a Premium or Luxury trim, each available with front- or all-wheel drive when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. Joining the XL7 is a new model for the Suzuki lineup, the SX4. The sporty 5-door hatchback features standard all-wheel drive, and is designed to provide sporty handling at an affordable price. The SX4 features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine teamed with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Power output is 143 horsepower, and fuel economy is estimated to 24 mpg city, 30 mpg hwy. Six airbags are standard, including side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags. ABS with electronic brake distribution is standard, and ESP stability control with traction control is available. SX4 provides seating for five with wide door openings for easy access. Rear seats can be folded flat for added cargo-carrying ability, and there are plenty of small storage spaces throughout the cabin. Built in Japan, the all-new SX4 is expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms during the third quarter of 2006 with prices starting around $15,000.

It’s already been a busy 2007 for Toyota, and it’s not even summer yet. Earlier this year, the Japan-based automaker introduced the all-new Camry. Currently the best-selling passenger car in America, the Camry gets a new look for 2007 with shorter overhangs, a lower ride height, tightly integrated headlights and a more angular grille give the car an aesthetic lift. These changes were evolutionary rather than revolutionary, as the company did not want to make drastic changes to a car that was already selling very well. Likely to increase sales further, especially given the price of gasoline, is the new Camry Hybrid. Expected to follow the standard Camry later this year, the new hybrid combines a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a high-output electric motor to produce a total of 192 horsepower, which is more than the 3.0-liter V6 in the 2006 Camry. However Toyota is predicting drivers could go as many as 43 miles per gallon, giving the Camry Hybrid a range of 600 miles between fill-ups. Almost able to match that fuel savings is Toyota’s new entry-level car, the Yaris. The Yaris first launched in Europe in 1999, was named the 2000 European “Car of the Year” and has become Toyota’s best-selling model in the European market. This subcompact passenger car replaced the ECHO in the U.S. when it arrived this past spring. The Yaris is offered as both a hatchback and a sedan for the U.S. and is designed to offer a level of style and fun-to-drive performance that is often not found in the subcompact class while the interior provides a surprising level of roominess and comfort.Additional Coverage: Toyota Camry

For those who are looking more for utility and off-road fun than good fuel mileage, there’s the all-new Toyota FJ Cruiser. Although the FJ Cruiser has its own unique look, the styling and capability of this new off-roader are inspired by the FJ40 Land Cruiser that the automaker sold in 1960. Its flat roof, wraparound rear glass, round headlights, mesh grille, wide hood, vertical windshield and short overhangs are all styling cues taken directly from that classic FJ. In addition to its unique look, the FJ Cruiser possesses some standout features. For example, three windshield wiper blades provide maximum coverage of the windscreen. A unique door system makes passenger and cargo loading much easier. On each side of the vehicle, a large front door latches to a rear-hinged rear-access door, eliminating the pillar between the two—similar to the Honda Element. But first and foremost, the FJ Cruiser was designed to handle extreme off-road conditions. With an impressive 8.7 inches of wheel travel in front and 9.1 inches in the rear, the FJ Cruiser has ground clearance of 9.6 inches. Approach angle is 34 degrees, departure angle is 30 degrees, and the FJ can traverse up to 27.5 inches of water. The full-time 4WD system is the same as that found in the 4Runner. It features a Torsen limited-slip center differential with a locking feature. Meanwhile, this fall Toyota will bring out its redesigned full-size 2007 Tundra pickup truck. Carefully aimed directly at the heart of the pickup market, the new Tundra will have the ability to tow more than 10,000 pounds and will be offered with three different engines, including a new 5.7-liter i-Force V8. Increased size in every dimension, the 2007 Tundra has a longer wheelbase and an increase of 10 inches in overall length compared to the Access Cab it replaces. The new features include heavy-duty front brakes with four-piston calipers and larger discs, standard rear disc brakes, and a bigger, wider frame with 30 percent higher tensile strength steel. Tundra will be available in base, SR5 and Limited trim levels—buyers will be able to choose from more than 30 different configurations with three engines, three cab styles, 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, three trim levels and three different bed sizes, including a full 8-foot bed.Additional Coverage: Toyota FJ Cruiser

Volkswagen introduced the latest-generation Golf in Europe a few years ago, but we have been waiting for this new model to arrive in the U.S. It finally arrives later this year, but it picks up a name from VW’s past. The new Golf will be called the Rabbit when it goes on sale in North America this summer. Available in both two- and four-door versions, the Rabbit is larger and roomier than the Golf it replaces. Standard features will include an advanced ABS braking system, traction control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags, air conditioning and anti-theft alarm system with remote locking. While this model is new to the U.S., VW is referring to the Rabbit as a 2006 model. The same is the case for the all-new GTI just arriving in showrooms now. The fifth-generation of the GTI, this hot hatchback boasts a 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, standard 6-speed manual transmission, and a new, fully independent sport-tuned suspension. For the first time the GTI is available with a 6-speed automatic-manual DSG transmission which is basically a manual transmission with an automatic clutch. The GTI is differentiated from its less-powerful Rabbit sibling with a black honeycomb grille with a decisive red frame strip outlining the radiator portion, as well as a roof spoiler, lower profile and use of aggressive black valences and side window moldings. Standard on the new GTI are low profile performance tires fitted on 17-inch alloy wheels, with an option to upgrade to 18-inch wheels. Distinct red brake calipers add to the sporty look of the GTI. Meanwhile, Volkswagen will bring the new Eos hardtop convertible to the U.S. market soon, but there hasn’t been a hard date announced. This is the world’s first four-seat car with a five-section CSC (coupe, sliding, cabriolet) roof. The hardtop takes approximately 25 seconds to open or close. A tilting/sliding glass roof is integrated into the top, offering additional versatility. The Eos is equipped with a rollover protection system that extends roll bars in just a quarter second in the event of an impending rollover.

Embracing what the Swedish car company calls “Scandinavian Luxury,” the all-new 2007 S80 will arrive in showrooms later this year, updated with new style, powertrains and chassis. While the length is identical to the previous-generation S80, the new model is wider and taller, providing an impressive stance as well as a roomier interior. Exterior styling is fresh, but still easily recognizable as a Volvo. Inside is the slim center console that was first seen in the S40. The S80 will be the first Volvo sedan to be powered by the company’s compact V8 engine. The 4.4-liter engine produces 315 horsepower and an impressive 325 lb-ft of torque, most of which is available at a low 2000 rpm for great usable performance. An all-new 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine is being introduced in the S80, producing 238 horsepower. Both will be teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. And of course, being a Volvo, the S80 features a number of new safety innovations, including Adaptive Cruise Control that uses radar to monitor the distance from the car in front, alerting the driver and moving the brake pads closer to the brakes in preparation for an emergency stop. The S80 will also be equipped with Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) which notifies the driver if a vehicle is in the blind spot alongside the car. Full-time all-wheel drive will be available, and the new S80 utilizes Volvo’s Four-C technology, which automatically adjusts the chassis for different driving situations. Meanwhile, Volvo will enter the compact market later this year with the introduction of the new C30. Shown in concept form at last January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the C30 is a distinctively styled hatchback with room for four people. C30 is a bit wider and nearly 9 inches shorter than Volvo’s current smallest car in the U.S., the S40 sedan. The hatchback roofline slopes back to a rear glass that’s reminiscent of the classic Volvo P1800. Tires on the concept were large, 19-inchers from Pirelli, and the back of the car sported dual tailpipes. Available engines and other details of the production car will be released at its unveiling in September at the Paris Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz continues to roll out the new models for 2007 starting with the all-new S-Class The ninth-generation S-Class is a major leap in both comfort and safety technology, just as the previous generation was when it was introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year. The new S-Class is a bit larger with sharper styling than its predecessor but is easily recognizable as a Mercedes. A virtual showcase of technology, the flagship sedan features such items as Night View Assist, Pre-Safe systems, Distronic radar-based cruise control and dynamic seats. Although there’s plenty of cutting-edge technology in the new S-Class, it is first and foremost a luxury sedan, so occupant comfort is a primary goal of the design. With more than 42 inches of legroom, rear-seat passengers have plenty of room to stretch out. The soft leather seats can be heated or cooled and can feature multiple power adjustments, including recline. Initially available as the V8-powered S550, the lineup will also include the bi-turbo V12 S600 and the AMG S65 with an impressive 604 horsepower. Following the new S-Class will be a revised E-Class sedan and wagon. Unveiled at the 2006 New York Auto Show, the 2007 E-Class features a new front bumper and lower air dam, as well as a restyled front grille and headlights. Side mirrors, rear bumper and taillights also have a fresh look. Inside, the E-Class has also been refreshed, featuring a new steering wheel and shift lever as well as four new interior colors. Available models will include the E350, E550 with a new 382-horsepower V8, AMG E63 with a 503-horsepower V8 and the E320 BLUETEC. The BLUETEC diesel system combines several technologies to minimize exhaust emissions from the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. BLUETEC diesel engines depend on the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (less than 15 parts per million) that will become available in the U.S. in the fall of 2006. Meanwhile, the SL-Class roadster gets a facelift for 2007, as well as a power upgrade with the 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8. Additional Coverage: Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Mitsubishi

At this year’s New York Auto Show, Mitsubishi took the wraps off an all-new Outlander crossover SUV. A giant leap from the last generation, the new Outlander is considerably larger and more powerful than the model it replaces. Longer, wider and taller than the outgoing version, the Outlander features a wider track that not only increases interior space but also adds vehicle stability. Large fender flares, a rear-sloping roof, a bold grille and clear-lens taillights help give this crossover SUV a sporty look which the automaker says is an indicator of the new design direction for future products. Under the hood is a new 3.0-liter 220-horsepower V6 engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The top-level XLS trim has steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Outlander also features Mitsubishi’s All-Wheel Control (AWC) all-wheel-drive system. This combines electronically controlled 4-wheel drive with stability and traction control. The Outlander rides on a tuned suspension, and to provide better handling the roof has been made from aluminum to lower the center of gravity. The new Outlander will be available in LS and XLS trim with front- or four-wheel drive when it arrives in showrooms in November. On sale already is the 2007 Eclipse Spyder. Featuring a high-tech power convertible top that stows completely out of sight under a flush-fitting power tonneau cover, the Eclipse Spyder remains true to the Eclipse Concept car from 2004 with a taut, aggressive design. The new convertible is available as a GS or GT, the latter boasting a 260-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to either a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Nissan

It seems that every year Nissan introduces a number of new or redesigned models, and 2007 is no exception. Practically the entire car lineup is new, starting with the all-new Versa. It has been decades since Nissan sold a car the size of the new, front-wheel-drive Versa in the U.S. The five-door hatchback version of the Versa is 8 inches shorter overall than the 2006 Sentra sedan. However, due to its tall roof design, the Versa is quite roomy inside. The hatchback Versa has 38 inches of rear-seat legroom and an impressive 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. The Versa hatchback will go on sale this summer starting around $12,000, to be followed by the Versa sedan later in the year. With the introduction of the Versa, the Sentra moves upscale a bit for 2007. The new Sentra is 2.3 inches longer, 3.2 inches wider and 4 inches taller than its predecessor and promises the largest interior of any car in its compact competitive set. Exterior styling is designed to mimic the flagship Maxima, and the interior is updated and looks more substantial than before. Power in the Sentra has been increased to 135 horsepower with a new 2.0-liter engine. Moving up the line, Nissan has also introduced the next-generation Altima. Nissan describes the all-new 2007 Altima, the automaker’s best-selling car, as “evolutionary in design but revolutionary in its platform and hardware.” Shorter in length and wheelbase than the model it replaces, Altima is just as roomy inside. Utilizing Nissan’s new “D” platform with improved body rigidity and a redesigned suspension, the Altima was designed to be one of the best performing large front-wheel-drive sedans available. Power will come from either the 165-horsepower 2.5-liter engine or 3.5-liter 265-horsepower engine. Either can be teamed with Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Meanwhile, the flagship Maxima gets a redesigned exterior, refined interior and a number of feature upgrades for 2007. And in response to some criticism that the design of the Quest minivan may have been too unusual, the 2007 Quest gets a freshened exterior and a redesigned instrument panel and dashboard.

Pontiac

After introducing the sexy new Solstice roadster for 2006, Pontiac is wasting no time in following up with a more powerful version. The 2007 Solstice GXP features unique front and rear fascias, high-polish dual exhaust, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, special GXP gauge cluster and Cobalt Red seat stitching. But its not just about style—the Solstice GXP gets a number of improvements under the skin as well. Most importantly, this high-performance roadster gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic is available, and 60 mph can be reached in around 5.5 seconds with either transmission, according to GM. In addition to the power upgrades, the Solstice GXP gets a sport suspension, ABS, limited-slip differential and Stabilitrak stability control system. The 2007 Solstice GXP will be available in fall 2006.

When Porsche introduced the 997—the latest generation of 911—two years ago, the first models to arrive were the Carrera and Carrera S. Last year, Porsche added the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. So for 2007, Porsche has introduced the pinnacle of the legendary 911 lineup—the 911 Turbo. A considerable increase in power output is due in part to the exhaust gas turbochargers with the latest evolution of variable turbine geometry (VTG) that provides control of the exhaust gas flow throughout the entire range of engine speed. Despite the fact that engine capacity has remained unchanged at 3.6 liters, power has been increased from 420 horsepower to 480 horsepower. Maximum torque, in turn, is up from 383 to 457 lb-ft and starts in at a very low 1950 rpm. While the 2007 911 Turbo can reach 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds with a 6-speed manual transmission, the all-new Tiptronic S 5-speed automatic actually does the job in 3.4 seconds. Top speed with either transmission is 193 mph. Brakes, suspension and all-wheel-drive systems have all been upgraded to handle the added power. The 2007 911 Turbo goes on sale this summer in North America with pricing expected to start at $122,900. Later this year, the German automaker will bring the 2007 911 GT3 to America. The most powerful non-turbo 911 in history, the GT3’s 3.6-liter flat-six engine produces 415 horsepower. Sixty mph is reached from a standstill in just 4.1 seconds. To properly put this power to the road, the GT3 is equipped with a comprehensive traction package, including new electronic traction control adapted from the Carrera GT, standard-equipment 19-inch sports tires, and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The GT3 will be priced at $106,000 when it arrives in North America in August.

Saturn

Saturn has not had a lot to cheer about in the last few years, but General Motors is obviously investing in the brand for 2007. Three all-new Saturn products will hit the streets by the end of the year. Joining in the rush to create new crossover SUVs, Saturn will introduce the stylish new Outlook. With seating for up to eight passengers, Outlook features an articulated Smart Slide second-row seat that makes access to the third row easy. In addition to hauling passengers, the Outlook can carry plenty of cargo. Almost 20 cubic feet of space is available behind the third row, and with both rear rows folded, space expands to an impressive 117 cubic feet. Power comes from a new 265-horsepower 3.6-liter V6. The Outlook will be available in front- or four-wheel drive when it arrives in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2006. Joining the Outlook will be the new Aura sedan. Shown initially as a concept vehicle at last year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Aura has lost almost nothing in translation from concept to production. Sharing a platform with the Pontiac G6, the Aura takes the front-wheel-drive platform and wraps it in an elegant, European-influenced design. Two engines will be available on the Aura when it goes on sale in late summer. The base-level XE will feature a 3.5-liter V6, while the up-level XR will get the new 3.6-liter V6 producing 252 horsepower. Later in the 2007 model year Saturn will offer the Aura Green Line, which will use a powertrain system similar to the Vue Green Line. This will be the first GM passenger car to feature a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Meanwhile, the sexy Sky roadster just went on sale earlier this year, and Saturn has wasted no time in adding a high-performance Red Line version. The Red Line is distinguished with unique exterior and interior treatment and, of course, the most important part of what makes this Sky a Red Line is what’s under the hood. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Ecotec engine rated at 260 horsepower. The Sky Red Line goes on sale this fall.

When Subaru finally brought the much-anticipated Impreza WRX STi to America a few years ago, auto enthusiasts rejoiced. The STi is a race car for the street, with stiff racing seats, a large rear spoiler and minimal interior amenities to save weight. This car is all about performance, and nothing else really matters. For 2007, Subaru is building a version of the STi for the performance-car buyers that still like the finer things in life. The WRX STi Limited features soft leather trim, heated front seats, a power moonroof, improved sound insulation and a 120-watt stereo system with a 6-disc CD changer. The rear spoiler is much more subdued, and the Brembo brake calipers are painted black rather than the flashy red on the standard STi. Although the driver will be sitting in more comfortable surroundings, under that less-flashy skin still lurks that racing car for the street. The hood scoop remains to drive air into the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 293 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission. And, of course, this power put to the pavement through an advanced all-wheel-drive system. Only 800 of these STi Limited sedans will be sold—400 in Satin White Pearl and 400 in Urban Gray Metallic. Each will feature a sequential numbered plaque.

First offered in 2006, the latest spec.B gets a modified version of the 6-speed manual transmission from the Impreza WRX STi plus the advanced Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system and a Tire- Pressure- Monitoring System. The spec.B gets its power from a 2.5-liter intercooled turbo boxer engine producing 243 horsepower. The spec.B also introduces a new technology called Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive). SI-Drive controls the electronic throttle system’s response and allows the driver to choose, via a selector on the center console, one of three modes—Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp—depending on the desired driving result. Intelligent mode reduces engine torque and maximum power for smoother response when driving in traffic. This mode also improves fuel economy by as much as 10 percent. In Sport mode, throttle response is quicker with powerful, linear acceleration. In the ultimate Sport Sharp mode response is the quickest, delivering more power sooner. In vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the shift pattern is also affected by the selected mode.

The lineup of available Jeeps will practically double for 2007 with the introduction of new vehicles designed to considerably expand the brand’s draw. One of the most important introductions is the 2007 Wrangler. With clearly recognizable styling, the new Wrangler features increased ground clearance, larger wheels and tires, available next-generation Command-Trac and Rock-Trac transfer cases, new electric axle lockers, and an electro-disconnecting front sway bar and an all-new stiffer frame. But even more importantly, the Wrangler is now available with four doors. The 2007 Wrangler Unlimited is the first Wrangler to offer seating for five adults. Rear seats are quite roomy with 37.2 inches of legroom. Doors that open a full 90 degrees provide plenty of rear-seat access. Add to this a dramatic increase in available cargo space: Behind the rear seat is almost three times the cargo space of the standard Wrangler. With the rear seats folded, the available cargo space practically doubles to an impressive 83 cubic feet. The new Wrangler is also available with Jeep’s new three-piece “Freedom Top, ” which incorporates three removable panels—left and right front panels and one larger panel in the rear—that can be removed separately for a variety of open-air driving configurations. The standard “Sunrider” soft-top also features a number of configurations and makes open-air motoring just 30 seconds away. In fact, Jeep claims this new Wrangler Unlimited will be the only 4-door convertible available in the U.S. market when it hits showrooms this fall.
The legendary off-road brand is also introducing two new models that bring Jeep into new market segments—the all-new Compass and Patriot. Both these vehicles share a platform with Dodge’s new Caliber; however, they look quite different and have different capabilities and goals. Compass is the first model from Jeep that is not expected to handle the tough Rubicon trail. Instead, it’s designed to provide the functionality of a sport-utility vehicle with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car. Compass features a Jeep seven-slot grille, round headlights and trapezoidal wheel openings. The windshield is steeply raked and the side profile shows the uniquely sculpted fender shapes with standard 17-inch aluminum wheels or optional 18-inch wheels. Compass is powered by a 172-horsepower engine and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the Patriot has more traditional Jeep styling—in fact, quite reminiscent of the original Cherokee. The squared lines, signature 7-slot grille and short overhangs contribute to its style as well as its off-road capability. And unlike the Compass, the Patriot has earned the “Trail Rated” badge through a higher ground clearance and a new four-wheel-drive system called Freedom Drive II. This system features a second-generation continuously variable transmission with a low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated. Patriots with Freedom Drive II feature 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a full-size spare tire, an air-filtration system, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lights. The off-road Patriot is also 1 inch higher and meets Jeep off-road capability requirements for traction, water fording, articulation, maneuverability and ground clearance including 9 inches of ground clearance, a 29-degree approach angle, a 33-degree departure angle and a 23-degree breakover angle. Additional body sealing and high-mounted drivetrain vents support the Patriot’s 19-inch water-fording capability. Both Patriot and Compass arrive in showrooms later this year. While it looks similar to the model it replaces, there are many improvements and upgrades under the skin. Exterior changes to the new Sorento are rather subtle, featuring redesigned front headlights, a revised front grille insert, more rounded bodyside cladding, and redesigned taillights. Inside, the center console, gauge cluster and floor console are covered in new, upscale wood and metal trim materials. Safety features have been upgraded for 2007 as well. Already a recipient of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) five-star rating for front and side crash tests, Sorento features front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, side-curtain airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control, a tire-pressure-monitoring system and active front head restraints. Under the hood is a new all-aluminum 3.8-liter V6 that produces an impressive 262 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission. This is a 38 percent increase in power over the previous year’s engine, and has more horsepower than the Toyota 4Runner V8. The Sorento also boasts a class-leading 5,000-pound towing capacity. Truly off-road capable, Sorento is available with a full-time automatic Torque-on-Demand four-wheel-drive system with low range that detects wheel slippage 200 times per second. But the biggest news is the complete redesign of the flagship LS luxury sedan. The LS 460 carries on the L-finesse design style that the brand first introduced in the GS and IS sedans. Available for the first time in an extended wheelbase version, the LS 460 L provides the utmost in comfort for rear seat passengers. The rear of the car has two sculpted seats and there’s an optional ottoman package in which, rather like in a private jet, the right-hand seat reclines by up to 45 degrees with an adjustable footrest and built-in massager. Entertainment comes from a Mark Levinson audio system that promises theatre-level quality from its 19 speakers, while a hard drive can store no fewer than 4,000 songs. LS 460 gets its name from the size of its engine—a 4.6-liter V8 engine with a dual fuel-induction system that delivers 380 horsepower. This is teamed with the industry’s first eight-speed automatic transmission. The new LS comes out this fall, and will be followed sometime in 2007 with the LS 600h, a V8 hybrid version of this luxury sedan. Sporting a powerful hybrid powertrain right now is the new GS 450h. An impressive 339 horsepower is generated from teaming a powerful 3.5-liter V6 teamed with a high-output electric motor. Zero to 60 mph is reached in just 5.2 seconds, and combined city/hwy fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg.
The interior of the ES 350 reflects the brand’s luxury roots with premium wood, polished metal and leather accents throughout.
Lincoln revamps practically the entire lineup for 2007 with a redesigned Navigator, the new MKX crossover and a new name and look for Zephyr. The all-new Navigator features distinctive styling, a new frame with independent suspension, and for the first time Lincoln will offer the Navigator L, which has a 12-inch-longer wheelbase and 25 cubic feet of additional cargo space. The front of the Navigator is dominated by a bold chrome grille integrated with HID headlights, with the same pattern carried over to the lower fascia. Inside, the Navigator offers premium luxury seating in all three rows, a flow-through center console, real wood trim and an available Powerfold third-row seat that folds flat into the floor. Joining the Navigator this fall is the all-new MKX. Sharing a platform with the Ford Edge, MKX is the first vehicle to use Lincoln’s new naming system. Offering the luxury, comfort, and convenience that would be expected from a luxury car, the 2007 MKX luxury crossover-utility vehicle (CUV) offers features such as adaptive front lighting, a Panoramic Vista Roof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a 14-speaker THX Certified audio system and DVD navigation. The MKX is powered by a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has an intelligent all-wheel-drive system tuned with an emphasis on luxury performance in all-weather driving. Following the same naming convention, the just-introduced Zephyr will be renamed MKZ for 2007. In addition to the new name, MKZ gets a 263-horsepower V6, available all-wheel drive and a restyled front grille and fascia.

Mazda continues on a run of introducing new products with three all-new vehicles for 2007. Described as a crossover SUV with the soul of a sports car, the CX-7 looks the part with bold fender flares, a steeply raked windshield, tapered side-window graphic and large wheels and tires. And there’s power under the hood to back up sporty claim—a new version of the turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 244 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is available to help put the power down to the ground. The interior also reflects a sporty style with a three-dial instrument cluster, a console supporting the shifter within close reach, a three-spoke steering wheel and firmly contoured front bucket seats. The ventilation dials, the glove box door knob and the door armrests were all tuned to provide a high quality look and feel. With the idea of providing the same “zoom-zoom” with more room, Mazda has also introduced the larger CX-9. With room for seven passengers, the CX-9 echoes the styling of the CX-7 and is the second Mazda vehicle designed specifically for the North American market. The CX-9 is also the largest vehicle Mazda has ever sold in the U.S., however it is not just a stretched CX-7. CX-9 is built on an all-new platform that is a derivative of the Mazda6. Mazda claims its newest SUV has best-in-class legroom for all three rows, and access to the third row is made easy with a one-touch system to slide the second row out of the way. Both rows fold flat offering great cargo-carrying capability. Power comes from an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces and estimated 250 horsepower. Additional Coverage: Mazda CX-7

While 2006 is the “year of the car” for Ford, it appears that 2007 will be the year of the truck and SUV. Earlier in 2006 the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac began arriving in showrooms. With rugged, new exterior styling and a versatile interior with rubber floor covering, the new Sport Trac also gets a V8 for the first time. The available 292-horsepower V8 is teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Also available are a composite cargo box with two-tier storage ability, available hard tonneau cover, three integrated tool bins with drain plugs, and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. Joining the Sport Trac is the all-new 2007 Ford Expedition. Styling now matches closely with the F-150, including the signature three-bar grille. Inside are new seats, a revised dashboard and an array of available amenities. Ford also is increasing the Expedition lineup with a new Expedition EL. Almost 15 inches longer than a standard Expedition, the new EL adds 24 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third-row seat. This makes the Expedition almost as large as the outgoing Excursion. The new Expedition will go on sale this fall.

Also on sale this fall is the all-new Edge. Aimed to compete in the hot crossover SUV market, the sleek and aggressively styled Edge debuted at the North American International Auto Show with a bold three-bar grille similar to the Ford Fusion midsize sedan. Powered by a new 3.5-liter 265-horsepower V6 engine and teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Edge will be available with front- or all-wheel drive. With seating for five, the Edge has a number of innovative features including the panoramic Vista Roof, laptop storage in the center console, an MP3 player jack and rear seats that fold at the touch of a button. While the Edge offers impressive performance in the crossover SUV segment, Ford and Carroll Shelby have joined together to offer something with considerably more performance—the Shelby GT500. The most powerful production Mustang ever, the new Shelby GT500 will boast a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine producing an impressive 475 horsepower. Available as a coupe or convertible, the GT500 has a bulging hood, a lower air splitter, Le Mans racing stripes, 18-inch wheels and, of course, the mean-looking Cobra badge in the grille. Meanwhile, the Ford GT high-performance supercar ends production after the 2006 model year. Additional Coverage: Ford Shelby GT500

Like its Chevrolet cousin, the GMC Yukon has been completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. The Yukon gets new exterior styling as well as increased interior refinement and improved interior quietness. With more power as well as better fuel economy, the Yukon is built on a new, fully boxed frame with wider front and rear track, coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a new, premium interior. Noise-reducing components and materials are used throughout the body structure, including the headliner, door seals and dash area. Features include a power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat, a remote start system, first- and second-row heated seats, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a rearview camera system, a touch-screen navigation system, power-articulating running boards and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a larger 8-inch screen. The upscale Yukon Denali is also new and features fresh styling that further differentiates it from the standard Yukon with a chrome grille, new front and rear fascias, specific headlight design, unique taillights and extensive use of chrome trim. A power fold-and-tumble second-row seat, heated first- and second-row seats, a power liftgate, remote start and all-wheel drive are standard on the Denali. Joining the new full-size SUV later this year will be the completely new 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck. Along with the fresh styling, the Sierra gets wider front and rear tracks, a new stiffer frame, updated suspension, improved brakes and an impressive array of safety features. Extended cab models feature rear access doors that open 170 degrees for easy access. Also available is an enhanced DVD player, navigation system, remote vehicle starting and automatic windshield wipers. Like the Yukon, the Sierra will be available in a Denali version that will boast a luxurious interior and a powerful 6.2-liter 400-horsepower V8 engine. The new Sierra is scheduled to arrive in showrooms later this year.

When Honda first introduced the Civic to America more than 30 years ago, it was a tiny subcompact hatchback. The Civic has grown considerably since then, and now Honda is introducing a new subcompact hatchback called the Fit. A far cry from that original Civic, the Fit is a stylish 5-door with seating for five and generous cargo space. The interior can be configured in a number of different ways with what Honda calls the 60/40 split Magic Seat. Seat bottoms can be folded up against the seatbacks to carry tall items behind the front seat; rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests for expanded cargo space; and front seats can be reclined flush with the rear seat to create a comfortable place to lounge (when the car is parked). Fit is well-equipped with standard features such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, front and side airbags and side-curtain airbags. ABS is also standard. A Fit Sport adds a security system with keyless entry, cruise control and a 200-watt, AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers and MP3/WMA playback capability. Fit is powered by a fuel-efficient 109-horsepower engine. MSRP for the Fit with a 5-speed manual transmission starts at just $13,850 (not including destination charge). In other news, the Civic Si sedan is slated to go on sale this fall. This will be the first time Honda has offered its performance-oriented Civic in two bodystyles. The 2007 model will be based on the Si Sedan Concept which was unveiled at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.

This automaker from Korea continues to grow at an amazing pace. Last year Hyundai introduced a new Sonata, Tucson and luxurious Azera. For 2007, there will be a new Elantra, Accent, Santa Fe and the brand’s first minivan, the Entourage. The Elantra is all new for 2007, with fresh styling, a roomy, upscale interior and a host of new features. All levels of Elantra get front and side airbags as well as airbag curtains. Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) are also standard. Powered by a 138-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 136 lb-ft of torque, Elantra is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Leather seats are available and for the first time they can be heated. The new Elantra will be available as GLS, SE or upscale Limited when it goes on sale later this year. Joining the Elantra is the entry-level Accent 3-door hatchback, following the introduction of the Accent sedan for 2006. Like the sedan, the Accent 3-door features an upgraded exterior appearance with a chrome-accented grille, aerodynamic headlights, larger wheels and tires and smoothly integrated taillights. Power comes from a clean-operating 1.6-liter engine, and while the sedan was tuned for comfort, the 3-door has more of a sporty feel, with the SE getting a sport-tuned suspension and stiffer spring rate. Like the Elantra, the Accent is well-equipped with both comfort and safety features.

Hyundai is also introducing a completely redesigned Santa Fe, which is the first production vehicle designed at Hyundai’s design center in Irvine, Calif. The Korea-based company wants to provide SUV customers with segment-leading standard safety technologies and a high level of standard equipment at a very competitive price. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), anti-whiplash active head restraints and six airbags including side-curtain airbags are all standard equipment. Santa Fe will be available with a choice of two V6 engines. The standard 2.7-liter V6 is upgraded for 2007 and produces more than 180 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The 3.3-liter V6 is lighter, more fuel efficient and cleaner burning than the previous-generation Santa Fe’s 3.5-liter V6, while producing an additional 30 horsepower. Preliminary output estimates are more than 230 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains are expected to meet the stringent Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) emissions requirements. Joining the Hyundai lineup this spring is the all-new Entourage minivan. The seven-passenger Entourage is the automaker’s first vehicle with its Hyundai Hideaway third-row seat, a simple-to-use 60/40 split-folding rear seat that disappears into the floor when collapsed, giving passenger and cargo flexibility. The 2007 Entourage offers dual power rear sliding doors with power windows, an adjustable conversation mirror and a foldaway center tray table with four standard cupholders. This is in addition to the array of standard features now expected from a Hyundai. The Entourage is powered by a 242-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control.

The sporty G35 sedan moves into its second generation for the 2007 model year. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the redesigned G35 features a sculpted hood with L-shaped headlights. The grille is more pronounced, which gives the new G a more aggressive, wider stance. Taillights are also updated and the trunk lid has an integrated spoiler, while prominent dual exhaust outlets complete the sporty appearance. Inside are styling cues and functionality taken from the M sports sedan, including a RearView Monitor, a touch screen navigation system with available real-time traffic and the “Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose,” combining the industry’s first 3-way front door speaker array using 10-inch woofers with an audiophile quality head unit. Under that stylish, new hood is the next-generation 3.5-liter V6 expected to produce more than 300 horsepower. The G35 can be equipped with either a 5-speed automatic or close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. The new G features 4-wheel independent suspension with lightweight aluminum components and improved body stiffness, and is also offered with Infiniti’s “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system.

Starting the 2007 model year earlier in 2006, Jaguar has already launched the all-new XK roadster and coupe. Primarily unchanged since its launch almost 10 years ago, this second-generation XK is light years from where it had started. The most technically advanced Jaguar ever to be built, the 2007 XK uses the latest aerospace technologies alongside more traditional Jaguar skills to create a luxurious, powerful, highly advanced sports car with an aluminum monocoque body structure that is 31 percent stiffer (the convertible is 50 percent stiffer) than its predecessor with a 10 percent improvement in power- to-weight ratio due to impressive weight reductions. The all-new XK is visibly sportier than the model it replaces, but the design and shape remain true to Jaguar’s tradition of elegance, with a long hood, steeply raked windshield, large wheels and minimal overhangs. The distinctive oval grille opening, prominent power-bulge in the hood, and rear hatchback all echo the style of the classic E-type. But unlike that classic, under the new Jag’s long hood lurks the latest-generation 4.2-liter Jaguar V8 which produces 300 horsepower, teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Later this year look for the more-powerful XKR which is expected to boast a supercharged V8 engine producing around 400 horsepower.
